In Chapter 14 of "Underground to Canada," the main characters, Julilly and Liza, are taken to a plantation in the Southern United States where they are forced to work as slaves. They endure harsh conditions and mistreatment as they struggle to survive and maintain hope of one day escaping to freedom in Canada. This chapter highlights the brutal reality of slavery and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.

Language in Canada today is divisive. Past agreements, rules, and laws are responsible for unifying Canada but Canada has grown considerably since it's early days.

Today language laws are being used to force a language and culture that has no relevance to most Canadians outside of a single province. That province is using colonial claims that as a Mother Country it will decide what language people will speak.

Of course that is not working so instead they use archaic language laws to advance their cause, to reserve government jobs and to give special status to their group.

Even in provinces where they make up less than 2% of the population they demand, and get services in their language even when much larger minorities cannot. Yet those larger minorities must pay for language services they will not use. They must also pay extra for labeling in a language none of their customers can read and are kept from jobs that they would otherwise be fully qualified for.

It isn't sustainable and many Canadian do not agree that a Canadians status within Canada, their access to government jobs, to resources and funding, should be decided on their choice of parents.

Language is bringing into question the very idea of special status for "founding" peoples and nations. Those with that special status are spending a lot of tax money to ensure they keep that special status over other Canadians. Rather than let Canada evolve and change with the citizens, the population, they are forcing a confrontation that is very divisive.

If those with special status are not prepared to accept being equal to all Canadians then Canada does run the risk of being divided into little groups.

And Language is a flashpoint for these racial and cultural inequities. Our language laws make it impossible to not see the superiority the Founding Peoples claim over all Canadians.

Unlike the United States, which has cities like Xenia in Ohio, Canada does not have any known cities, towns, or provinces that begin with the letter "x." The closest match might be the province of Quebec, but even that does not start with an "x."
