How many nonsmokers die of lung cancer each year from exposure of secondhand smoking?

it is estimated that 3000 non-smoking adults die each year....... check out this webbie http://www.tobacco-facts.info/second_hand_smoke.htm

Improved answerIf you believe that you'll belive anything! Do you think that by living in a city (or anywhere there are cars, houses, industry present) that you are breathing in less toxins than by standing next to someone who is smoking?

Any statistics on this matter are conjecture. Lung cancer is something (like any type of cancer) that can be triggered by a great multitude of things, only one of which being smoking.

You cannot ask everyone who has died of lung cancer whether at some point in their lives they had been "exposed" to secondary smoke, therefore there is no answer to this question unless you choose to believe the statistics, which are likely available from your local or regional government beauraux.

To the readers of this answer; when considering that it may be one-sided, please bear in mind the nature and agenda of the statististicians who would try to prove it wrong. They WANT people to give up smoking, and their statistics are no more than scaremongering and propaganda.

During my daily work I am subject to breathing minute doses of numerous toxic substances (spray paint, ether & fuel vapour, aluminum oxide, iron oxide, zinc oxide, sulpher dioxide, silicon acetate to name but a few). I know and understand the effects of these chemicals on my lungs and believe me, if I die of lung cancer I could not blame it on smoke, even though I am a moderate to heavy smoker. Of course, the number of toxins I breathe more than triples if I leave the workshop and drive down the road to the local shop for lunch!

A comment that is related:

I once knew a woman with lung cancer who did not smoke. She did not survive. However, she told me soon after her diagnosis that her doctor had said that 15% of lung cancer cases were NOT due to smoking. That would include all lung cancers in non-smokers, whether they were caused by second-hand smoke or radon or other toxic substances or simply by genetic mutation.

Can a baby have leukemia?

My son was diagnosed with sensory processing disorder at the age of 20 months. While receiving therapy. He displayed many symptoms of early Autism but no one wanted to put that label on him yet. So about 6 months later, just when we were getting into the swing of things and I was learning everything that i could about his disability when he fell ill with a horrible fever. It was so bad and wouldn't break so I rushed him into the nearest er. Blood tests that were performed came back abnormal and they wanted to check further. More blood tests and a lumbar puncture were to confirm that my son was severely anemic, neutropenic, and needed several blood transfusions. He was diagnosed with ALL (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia) Almost 3 years later, here we are with only a few more months of chemotherapy to go (he is 5 1/2 years old today) and his school wants to do more evaluations on him since he will start kindergarten next year. His speech issues and sensory problems are getting better, but he remains still very developmentally delayed. His recent evals conclude that my son is on the Autistic spectrum, moderate to severe in some areas. He cannot continue schooling at that school because they do not have all the resources to care for a child that severe. So off to a new school come August of 2011. I am very happy that after all this time, he has finally been diagnosed. But at the same time, I am heart broken once again. Another diagnosis, more therapy. On the bright side, he will be cancer free come July 2011! For such a young boy, he has been though an awful lot, but everything happens for a reason. So to answer your question, I cannot totally answer that. I do know that my son has Autsim and cancer (leukemia) but I am pretty sure that this is very rare as I cannot find any information anywhere on the internet. I cannot find a connection. The only thing I have come up with is that maybe my son has a weak immune system and maybe something triggered both the Autsim and cancer, or maybe made him more prone to both. I guess I will never really know. I hoped I have helped you out somewhat. Take care.

The two are definitely related in my daughter's case. Google NataliesTrekCIC and contact me if you want more info.

Is stage 4 cancer concerned terminal?

I have a familly member who just diagnosed with stage 4 lymphoma. Stage 4 is an advanced stage and usually means that cancer has spread through out the body. This does not mean that is 100% terminal. You need to look at the age of the patient, their over all health and the stage together. You should always be realistic and prepare yourself for the worst but still try to be supportive and hope for the best. If you are asking because you or someone you know has been diagnosed. Then i wish you the best. Make sure to always get more than one opinion on treatment and that you are dealing with specialist. You want someone who specializes on your type of cancer as they will probably have the most information and provide you with the best course of action.

What is a movable lump in front of the ear that is painful to touch?

It probably is a swollen lymph node, which could be from a range of things. If you have a thyroid problem it could be from that, it could just be an infection and it could just be allergies as well.

Here are some of the things that the swollen lymph node could be from:

  • common cold
  • infection
  • hyperactive thyroid / thyroid disease
  • lymphoma [ tumor in the lymph node]
  • gingivitis
  • viruses
  • mononucleosis
  • tonsillitis
  • Hodgkin's disease
  • Leukemia
  • Tuberculosis
  • Sarcoidosis
  • Toxoplasmosis
  • Secondary syphilis
  • Yaws
  • Cat scratch fever/allergies
  • Lymphatic obstruction

[ Those are just some of the reasons they could be]

I would call the doctor immediately if you , cannot move your neck , if the overlaying skin is red, rapid increase of size with in a couple of hours, fever over 105, diffculting breathing and swallowing. If this is happening and you can't get a hold of your doctor, go to an emergency room!

If your lymph node is extremely tender to the touch , have a problem moving neck/head/arm/leg, increase to an 1 in or more , fever lasting more than 2-3 days, i would call with in 24-to 48 hours... if you cant move ur neck arm legs ect, call with in 24!

Honetsly, I wouldn't jump the gun and say this is cancer. Lymph Nodes stay swollen for a 2-4 weeks than eventually go down. I would still call your main physician and tell him/her your sympthoms and let them judge for you whether or not you should go in and see them.

If you want some of the pain to go down, get a hot wash cloth and put it over the bump... but please do not take aspirin when having this.

I also read that the more you touch it the longer it takes for it to return to a normal size... not sure if this is true but just in case...

Hope this is Helpful...

How long on average can a terminal prostate cancer patient live?

Expected Life Span with Aggressive PC

I have aggressive PC, and my Dr. is telling me that with near certainty, I will be dead within 5 years. Of course, I continue to hope and pray, that I'm the statistical anomaly who has a little more time left, (I'm only 52 right now, and I've already gone through IMRT and Hormone Therapy. The radiation cause avascular necrosis in my right hip, so I had to quit the hormone therapy for a few months to get a new hip, and I rebounded from 0.2 to 7 in those 3 months. I'm back on the hormone therapy, and looking for other non-standard cures I can try as the normal cures are what is expected to allow me the 5 years. The scariest part about the 5 years (from my personal perspective, discounting leaving loved ones etc) is that most of this is expected to be in significant pain, inability to work, and requiring medical attention. Since my wife left when I got diagnosed, I'm looking forward to this on my own for the most part. (She even took my dogs...) Anyway, the answer to the question, according to my diagnois is 5 years. I do believe that everyone will respond differently to the cancer and to the treatment. Additionally, I firmly believe that mental attitude will have a significant bearing on how fast you deteriorate or recover. Best of luck to all of you on this board, suffering from this personally, or helping those who do. God bless.
