Yes, the 409 was first produced in 1961 and installed in the Chevy Impala SS. But considering that only 142 cars were equipped with the 409 that year it would be an extremely rare car indeed. I have never seen one in a 1961 Impala. The very next year the 409 was installed in over 15,000 Impalas. The engine was last produced in 1965.

Hi, I gather it's the breather tube that's smoking white...or is it the engine exhaust? Let's assume it's the breather draft tube. I specialise in crankcase breathing for vintage, classic and today's motorcycles. In these, white smoke is blow-by vapour venting the crankcase. The vapour is a cocktail of water, unburnt fuel and other exhaust products. If it were my 327, and I'm sorry I sold mine...I'd take the breather to ground, with a draft tube projecting into the air-stream under the car, with a 45 degree slash-cut in the end, and the cut perpendicular to ground. I just did programmed my key-less entry this morning after looking for about 5 hours.

OK so first locate your computer hookup under the dash, it should have 2 rows of 6 plugs.

Grab a piece of wire and put one end in the very bottom left hole, if your looking at it from the front of the seat. ground the other end of the wire to the truck. Your truck should lock and unlock meaning it is in programming mode. leave the wire in the plug and make sure it is still grounded, hold it if needed.

Take your key fob and hold the unlock and lock button until the truck unlocks and locks again. take the wire out and test the key fob. Repeat this if need for another key fob.

The 305 & 350 are basically the same engine. The 305 just has a smaller bore(3.736 vs. 4.000), not quite the power or torque, but durability should be almost identical. It is more costy to rebuild a 305 than a 350 due to the popularity of the 350. If power is not an issue then go for the 305 if you can get one cheaper. If you want more power, then a 350 is the way to go.

If you are talking about big V-8s, Chevrolet never sold a hemi. Some of the smaller 4 and 6 cylinder engines might be considered hemis, but the closest Chevy production V-8 to a hemi is the big block 396, 427 and 454 "semi" hemis. These engines had nearly hemisperical combustion chambers but unlike a true hemi, the spark plug is not placed at the top of the domed cylinder head.

There are presistant rumors that in the 1960s Chevrolet was developing a hemi head for their big block "rat" motor. There were undoubtedly engineering concepts build inside Chevrolet's engineering departments. They never saw the light of day, probably because Chevrolet didn't see a need for the heads. NASCAR outlawed hemi heads in the mid '60s, so there was no need to develop a hemi for the super speedways.

The 454 Chevelles and Novas were the equal of anything ont the street, so there was no need to spend money on developing a hemi head for those cars.

Hemis were popular in drag racing circles, but the rat motor was able to hold it's own, until people like Kieth Black and Ed Donovan started buiding special aluminum racing engines specially fro drag racing.

In the early '70s, a racer named Nick Arias started producing custom aluminum hemi heads for the Chevy big block engine. These were true hemi heads, but they were not produced by Chevrolet or General Motors. Did Chevrolet provide any enginering help for Arias? If they did they never clained any reponsibilty.

Nick Arias Jr. has recently reintroduced the Chevy hemi heads, and is now selling complete Chevy head engines for the aftermarket.

You cannot just convert Cubic Inches to Horsepower. Take the 454 you are referring to. When this engine was produced it came with different horsepower ratings depending on year and what vehicle it was installed in. The 454 in 1970 cranked out 450 hp in LS6 trim. The LS5 version of this engine only produced 390 hp the very same year. Same 454 engine but 60 hp difference the same year. You would have to know the year and what trim the engine was to know the actual hp.

You can backyard mechanic test it by removing the fuel line from the carb and crank it over, if fuel pumps out the line,the pump would seem ok. The manner in which the fuel pumps is critical, it must pump with some pressure not just ooz out.Be careful where the fuel spills also to keep safe.

Lift the truck in the air using a jack then secure the vehicle with jack stands then take the tires off with a socket and ratchet next take the cotter pin out of the castle nut on the bottom side of the ball joint after that is take the castle nut off remove the 3 bolts on top knock the old ball joint out and reverse process for instillation make sure you torque the wheels to the right specs

the firing order is 1-3-4-2 with the number 1 cylinder located at the front of the engine. distributor rotates clockwise with the number 1 post on the cap is at the front
