I could never tell you what to do in this situation, but I will do my best to advise you. I do not know why were not supposed to discuss your relationship, but that already sets off a red flag. If you are in a healthy, happy relationship, you do not have a problem talking about it; and there is no reason to keep it a secret. I would go ahead and talk about it with your mom, or whoever you feel comfortable with. Let them know that this is something that you were not supposed to discuss, but you came to them anyway because of how important you feel this is. They will appreciate you coming to them, and they will listen to you.
Never second-guess a situation. How do you know it won't work out? I have friends whose husbands work in oil fields for 6 months at a time while she stays at home and they have been married for years. I also have friends who are married and are from different cultural backgrounds, so never say never! My life is very different from my husbands and I like it like that. We have lots in common in other ways and also a lot more intersting things to talk about because our lives are so different. Once you get over the fact "never say never" when you are next talking to your friend tell him/her that you've had such a great time together (providing they aren't married) what would he/she feel about going out on a real date and testing the waters.
