What is the function of the anal fin?
A fish's fins have many functions. Fish have several fins, and what they do with them depends on their species. Some fins are used purely for decoration or to attract a mate, but most have more practical functions. Generally, the fish's tail (caudal fin) is used for propulsion and steering.
The dorsal fin can be used to control height in the water and steering.
The fins on the sides of the body are used to balance the fish, for propulsion, for steering and paddling.
The pectoral fins on the fish's underside are used for steering.
The anal fin in the male livebearer is modified for use during internal fertilisation - it becomes a penis-like organ called a gonopodium.
If tadpoles live with goldfish will the goldfish eat them?
I had several small tadpoles in a tank- each less than 1/2 ich long. I added 2 goldfish who promptly ate all the tadpoles. One goldfish died, the other thrived. I suspect the one goldfish died from overeating but I can't rule out parasites, bacteria or other problems from the tadpoles although I would have expected the other to get ill as well. I guess the one certain thing is that if you like the tadpoles, don't add goldfish. S.
Do goldfish need direct sunlight?
When someone asks a question it is wrong to call them stupid. They are asking for a reason.
Anyway, yes goldfish can live in water that has sunlight coming into it. You must offer them shade as well. Two problems with direct sunlight is algae and water temperature. Direct sunlight can raise water temps considerably depending on the intensity and the size of the pond or tank etc. Direct sunlight can also cause algae blooms.
Why does goldfish have no energy?
I suppose that your goldfish is not eating enough. If you are taking care of several other goldfish in the same time, are you making sure that goldfish is getting his own share, or if the bigger fish are all stealing it?
I suggest that you examine them carefully when you feed your goldfish, and make sure the goldfish gets his own share (or she, whatever).
How much does a twenty gallon fish tank cost?
Impossible to say there are too many variables, for example what stand will it be on, how wide is the tank, how deep from front to back, is it square, is it another shape, all need to be considered as obv water is a fluid and has now pre defined height etc
The only way you will find out is get your tape measure out and measure it including stand
How do you know if a goldfish are mating?
If your fish are going to mate, this will typically begin when the female is full of eggs. The male will chase her and poke his head against her side and belly in an attempt to get her to release eggs. If she does, the male will then release what is called milt in an attempt to fertilize the eggs.
Unless you have plenty of room to raise the fry, you can leave the eggs in the tank for a day as the fish will eat them, and any eggs remaining should be removed as unfertilized eggs will grow fungus.
If you have the room to raise the fry, then you need to remove as many eggs as you can to a small dish with tank water; there is no need to remove the goldfish from their tank.
Yes gold fish would eat bread crumbs unless your gold fish is weird it won't but some fish eat bread crumbs
Size of tank for two goldfish?
between 5-10 gallons per inch of fish.
A single adult goldfish needs 20 gallons and another 10 gallons per addional goldfish (so two goldfish need about 30 gallons but something between 25-35 gals would be good). As babies they one can survive in a 10 or 15 gal but the tank should be upgraded as soon as possible.
How big will your comet goldfish grow in a 33 gallon tank?
It will continue to grow, contrary to popular belief, comets do NOT grow to the size of their tank, they continue to grow. Your comet will grow to be a max of 1 foot 2 inches long, you will need to give it at least 25 gallons to itself, it is inhumane to put a comet in that small of a tank and only give it 3.5 gallons to itself. They need at least 10 gallons when young and 25 full grown.
How often should you leave on the light in a fish tank?
When I started my aquarium, the book I read recommended eight hours of artificial light a day. I put mine on a timer and actually only run it for six hours as the algae was terrible. Bear in mind, mine is a ten gallon fresh water tank, a salt water or living tank may be different.
NO, fish are used to night & day, just like you! Turn it off when you go to bed or put it on a timer. Allow the fish to have some sleep. Light produce heat as a result of which temperature changes which the fish don't like when sleeping.
Also, light disturbs the fish in sleep.
Don't worry, I doubt there is any problem with your goldfish that turned black. It is most likely due to the reduction in light from where he was raised (perhaps in an outdoor pond) to the lesser artificial light. And black goldfish are COOL!
For a lengthier explanation of how/why fish change color (principally getting darker or lighter) see my reply to this question on this website:

How many liters in a 4 x 2 fish tank?
This depends on the height and width of the tank. The most common dimensions for a 6 foot aquarium are 6' x 2' x 2'. This is a 680 litre tank. Remember that it will be slightly less, because you won't fill it all the way to the top, and your gravel and ornaments will take up some of the water volume.
(If your dimensions are different, go to www.fishforums.net, click on 'calculator' and enter them to get the volume of your tank.)
What temperature does an aquarium have to be at?
Aquarium water should never be hot; depending on the type of fish you keep, the temperature will vary.
Goldfish for example are best in 75F, but a betta prefers 80F. Do plenty of research about the fish you are considering for your tank before going out & buying anything.
Are goldfish allowed to eat bread?
Yes, you can give your goldfish some bread, but the bread has to be cut into very small bits. Also keep in mind that not all types of goldfish will eat this bread, only some types do. The best food for goldfish and fish in general is the fish food that you buy from fish stores and it is labeled for fish. I recommend that you buy this fish food instead of feeding them bread bits because it is much more safer for their health.
What do you need to do to keep a goldfish alive?
Goldfish are among the most tolerant freshwater fish. They can survive in low water temperatures for weeks. Goldfish have a memory span of up to 3 weeks and can distinguish color, shape, and size.
How do you get rid of green fish tank water?
The only way you can stop the water in a pond turning green long term is to get yourself a UV filter system. (Ultra Violet) The water is pumped out of the pond into a filter box containing sponges and sometimes biological filtration substances and is also treated by a UV light which is either in the same filter box or an additional box which the water then passes through. The UV light kills off all the algae so clearing the water. These systems are very good, but can be quite expensive to set up and you will need to change the UV bulbs once a year as they lose there effectiveness. If you do purchase one of these systems, be aware NEVER look at the bulb when it is on as it can damage you eyesight and even blind you!
Can you put blue channel catfish in a pond with goldfish and koi?
No, unless you want the catfish to eat all your koi/goldfish--catfish grow fast and they will eat anything, including your other fish.
I have Blue Channel Catfish from about 1 inch two years ago, now 14 inches mixed in with both large and baby Koi. The Catfish eats the Koi food and interacts with them like nothing. I have never lost a fish. I think the key is getting a catfish when they are young and they can adapt, they're mostly bottom feeders and won't harm your Koi based on my experience. Make sure they start small though.
How many gallons in a 3ft by 18inch by 18 inch fish tank?
A aquarium that size could hold about 50 gallons of water. Remember when stocking your aquarium that, as a rule of thumb, when keeping a freshwater aquarium you should have about one inch of fish for every two gallons until it cycles; then you can go with one inch of fish per gallon. If you plan on setting up a saltwater tank, which is much more difficult to set-up and maintain, go with 1 inch of fish for every four gallons for the first six months; then one inch of fish for every two gallons. If keeping goldfish you should have about 1 inch of fish for every four gallons until the tank cycles; then one inch of fish for every two gallons.
No! It can make your hamster very very sick and depending on the type of fish food it could even kill it! YOUR HAMSTER WON'T KNOW THE DIFFERENCE! Man made Fish food doesn't exist in the wild so hamsters wouldn't know if it's good or not they will try and eat it, they are curious critters and they could get sick/poisoning, and they wouldn't even be able to tell u they were sick! Please don't feed it fish food: PETSMART SELLS GREAT BRANDS LIKE "VITAKRAFT" hamster food, for just $5
"Troubling" is the collective term for a group of goldfish but I would normally use the word "group" so that people would understand me.
Why is my goldfish going on the top of the aquarium?
The water has become de-oxygenated, do you have a little pump and pipe to put in the tank that will blow a steady stream of bubbles into the water ? You could also change the water, water driectly ROM the tap is not recommended as it may have chlorine or other checmicals in it.
A goldfish does not have a true stomach. The goldfish are various species in the family Cyprinidae, otherwise known as carp. Carp do not have true stomachs.
Carp digest food in the intestine, which is up to twice the length of its body. Different enzymes are secreted by the pancreas along the intestine. Trypsin and chymotrypsin are used to break down protein. These two enzymes do not require an environment which is strongly acidic. There is no part in the carp's intestine that is strongly acidic.
A real stomach is an enlargement of the digestive tract which secretes protein-digesting enzymes called proteases and strong acids to aid in food digestion.
A large part of a wild carp's diet is unicellular algae. A stomach isn't necessary to digest unicellular algae. Worms, insect larvae and fresh vegetable matter are only partly digested by the intestine of a carp. An animal with a true stomach would digest this material more completely.
The carp has a minor enlargement of the intestine sometimes referred to as a digestive bulb. This digestive bulb is not a true stomach because it does not contain strong acid. Sometimes, the digestive bulb is mistaken for a true stomach.
Not all animals have a stomach. There are a few vertebrates that don't have a true stomach. The platypus, which is a monotreme mammal, also does not have a true stomach.
How long does it take for the female Siamese fighter to lay eggs?
Hey there, It all depends on the male. Basically what happens is that. The male with show off to the female and so forth and fertalise the eggs inside her... then a little while later she will pop one egg out at a time and he will catch it in his mouth, swim up to the top of the water and place it in his bubble nest he made. This repeats until there are no more eggs. Keep watching the bubble nest up top. If u cant see little developing eggs in a few weeks its probably time to get another female. Hope this helps. catch! :oD
Can you put a goldfish in a bowl?
No. These fish need to be kept seperate. But if you want the goldfish to be eaten, you have to put them together :) You can put a Chinese fighting fish, also known as a betta, in a gold fish bowl. You could keep a betta and goldfish together, not reccamended though. The betta won't eat the goldfish, if it does, it's got srious problems:)
