It depends on how you define 'hot' and 'humid'. In most of the populated, low elevation areas of Hawaii (ie the places most people visit), daytime highs are typically in the 80s and nighttime lows are in the 70s. This is significantly cooler than most US cities on the mainland in summertime. However, someone visiting from San Francisco, CA or Seattle, WA might find it uncomfortably hot compared to what they are used to. Humidity is also a factor. Being a tropical island chain surrounded by a warm ocean, humidity is significant. But it is generally lower than the summer humidity frequently encountered in the Central/Eastern US. It is, however, MUCH higher than what is typically experienced in the Western US. So perhaps the best answer is that, if you come from a hot and humid part of the US mainland, Hawaii will be significantly less so. But if you are from the Western US or Northern Europe, you will likely find Hawaii to be quite hot and humid.

The entire Hawaiian Island chain is part of an underwater mountain range That stretches for thousands of miles form southwest to northeast. Each of the states Islands are the tops of these mountains. For instance on the Big Island of Hawaii there is Mauna Loa which when measured from the ocean floor is the worlds largest mountain. Mauna Kea also on the Big Island is the worlds tallest mountain when measured from the ocean floor. On Maui there is Haliakala. Others are Kilauea, Kohala and Hualalai.

I can only theorize that you are looking at about 12 hours. I flew from Daytona Florida (super east like you) and travelled slightly west north west before getting to the pacific. My flight left Daytona at 7am and I landed in Honolulu at 3PM (which would have been 8pm East coast time. That is actually 13 hours... Either way it's a long time!

The Wailua river on Kauai is the largest river in all of Hawaii, but the most controversial is the Waiahole stream on Oahu. The stream naturually ran from the Koolau Mountains through the Waiahole Valley and emptied into Kaneohe Bay. It fed many of the taro patches found throughout the valley. In 1995, the stream was diverted to feed many of the Leeward Oahu agricultural areas. In 2012, nearly 20 years later, the water rights over the stream is still a hotly contested issue with both windward and leeward Oahu farmers fighting over who should have the water.
