Personally, I am a Canadian married to an American and it has cost me about 3 thousand so far. The fees to the government are about 1500, you have to get a medical exam which ranges from 300 to 700 generally depending on where you are coming from and what they require and I found a lawyer who took my case for only 1000 which is very cheap. I would not suggest trying to do it yourself without a lawyer. There is a really good reason that immigration lawyers charge so much, it is a complicated law and without a lawyer you risk wasting tons of time and money. Good luck.

It is not so much overstaying your visa, it is overstaying your additional working documentation. The J-1 visa does not determine how long you can be in the country for legally, the supporting documentation does. I think the only way is to get a letter from the place you will start to work that says you are working for them and you are an employee with insurance and a salary. I think you might not be able to get it from a gas station or likewise, but better ask them. But I know for a fact that it is illegal to work with a tourist visa, your tourist visa will be revoked, you will be deported and your employer will pay fines if caught.
