It is a way to help in the inheritance and distribution of wealth, and a way at least to improve the chances that children will grow up in stable families. Of course, there are other reasons to uphold marriage that are deeply personal and/or religious in nature. It seems that the question is asking about marriage from the perspective of civil law. A personal or religious perspective would prabably not inspire the question.
