Why did Adam and Eve trust the snake?

The sinister serpent was unique among wildlife for cruel, selfish deceit. It slithered over to Eve and hissed that the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil looked beautiful, and the fruit looked just as delicious. Undoubtedly, there was a subliminal comparison to Eve as beautiful and divinely approved. So why should the tree and the fruit be any different in God's creation? It was a big mistake on Eve's part to listen to the sinister serpent, and to talk Adam into doing so too. She should have shown respect to God by having a divine audience first before rushing headlong into disaster.

I'm not too familiar with this species, I think alot would depend on how big they get, to be a danger to small children and pets.
