Statistics

Statistics deals with collecting, organizing, and interpreting numerical data. An important aspect of statistics is the analysis of population characteristics inferred from sampling.

What is the set of possible outcomes for flipping a coin once?

Heads - ½

Tails - ½

There are two reasonable outcomes of flipping a coin. You could get heads or tails. Some might argue that the third outcome is that the coin will land on the edge.

What is the difference between the largest 4 digit number with repetition and the largest 3 digit number without repetition?

Largest 4 digit number with repetition is 9999

Largest 3 digit number without repetition is 987

Difference is 9999 - 987 = 9012.

What is a pascal's triangle used for?

It is used for lots of things such as finding out the total possible outcomes of tossing coins. You find the line that corresponds with how many coins you toss and add all the numbers in that line to get the number of possible outcomes also you can use it to find combinations and permutations and triangular numbers

Listing of combinations of 5 numbers from 1 to 20?

There are (20 x 19 x 18 x 17 x 16)/(5 x 4 x 3 x 2) = 15,504 of them.

I'm afraid that's a bit much to ask of this website, and this contributor.

How many grams in 1.4 kilograms?

1.4kg = 1400g

"kilo" means "1000", so you multiple 1.4 by 1000, and the answer is 1400

In fact, even kids know this +_+;;

What are the steps of drawing a frequency curve?

I have included a link on histogram, which is the same thing as a frequency plot. It will give you some ideas on how to make one. I think a very important first step, is to check your data. Make sure it is correct. You should know the reasonable values for your data in case errors occurred in writing down the values (transcription errors). Then you need to find the range of your data (maximum and minimum). If this was a very large dataset, we would store the values in a spreadsheet program, to quickly identify the maximum and minimum. Once you know the maximum and minimum, you need to select the number of intervals or bins. There are some suggested equations as given in the related link, but you can chose the bins that you feel is appropriate. The bins must cover the full range of the data. There are many spreadsheet programs that will help. You may want to use the Excel spreadsheet, which will count the frequency (using the frequency function) and draw the plot. You still have to decide on the interval (bin) to use. However. if you are not familar with spreadsheets, then you might find it easier to draw it yourself. Generally, we use a bar chart in plotting frequencies. Once you have a frequency diagram showing the number of values in each interval, you can easily change this into a relative frequency plot (histogram), which is the number of values in each interval divided by the total number of values in the data set.

What is meant by Piecewise linear interpolation?

Interpolation in general is a way to determine intermediate values from a set of coordinates. Linear interpolation would be to fit a single linear function to the entire set of coordinates. Piecewise linear interpolation would then be to determine intermediate values from the set of coordinates by fitting linear functions between each set of coordinates. Connect-the-dots so to speak.

The distance from one point to another?

It depends on the route that you take. There is nothing in the question to suggest that the distance of interest is the shortest distance. In real life, the quickest route is not necessarily the shortest since travelling on highways may be faster even if longer. In such cases the relevant distance may not be the shortest. Also, you might wish to take the "scenic" route.

In any built-up area the shortest meaningful distance between two points will not be "as the crow flies": the taxicab metric (for example 3 blocks East and 4 blocks North), which was developed by Minkowsky, is more appropriate.

On the surface of a sphere, such as the Earth, the shortest distance is an arc of the great circle. In most cases this is not the straight line on a map.

What is a graph?

A graph is a visual representation of numerical or other information, often used for comparative purposes. Mathematical graphs include those in geometry that indicate points, lines, and curves within a Cartesian coordinate system. Other types of graphs (bar graphs, pie graphs) display numerical values or percentages as lengths or areas, and may use colors to indicate the data for more than one set of values.

What does skulk mean?

What units would you use to measure heat?

Heat energy is measured in joules (newton-meters), which are also a unit of work.

The calorie is a mostly-superseded unit equal to 4.2 joules, while the "food energy" calorie is actually a kilocalorie (1000 calories).

Units of temperature are a related value, indicating the relative contained heat energy. The units of temperature are the kelvin / degree Celsius and the different interval, the degree Fahrenheit. Classically, adding 1 mean calorie of heat energy would raise the temperature of 1 gram of water by 1 degree Celsius.

How do you convert 8.9 m to decimeters?

There are 10 decimetres in one metre. Therefore, 8.9 metres is equal to 8.9 x 10 = 89 decimetres.

What is the probability of picking a 2 from a standard 52 card deck not replacing it and then picking a 7?

The chance of picking a 2 is 4/52 since there are four twos. If you don't replace it then there are 51 cards and 4 sevens so the chance of picking the 7 is 4/51.

The chances of doing both things is

(4/52)(4/51)=16/2652 or 4/663 which is about .006

How do you find the mode of a number set?

The mode of a set of numbers is the number that occurs most often.
