Russia wants to keep Assad in power because Russia has no objections to Assad's authoritarian measures and has agreements with Assad to maintain naval ports in coastal Syria. Conversely, the Islamic State is a direct threat to these advantages the Russia enjoys from Assad and could further support Jihadist uprisings in the Russian Caucasus region, particularly in Chechnya and Daghestan. Russia is literally fighting Islamic State in Syria so that he can have an easier time fighting them in Russia.
