I don't see Windows Media Player format much anymore, if you come across an older site it might have a choice of high or low quality wmv to download. some may even still have it. these don't take up a whole load of space unless its a long video like a documentary or TV show. now there are browser plugins that play them right in your browser. quick time, windows media, and flash all play video and other content in your browser window with out having to actually *download* and save the file on your hard disk. it still does, but only temporarily unless you choose to (or even have the possibility to do so)

so basically it all depends on a number of factors. bit rate, video resolution, and length.
