Is ADHD medication similar to cocaine?

Yes, most ADHD medications are MUCH like cocaine, both are in the class of Amphetamine drugs. Cocaine comes from a plant and is natural, ADHD medications are man-made and are patented by drug companies to make BIG $$$. This is why cocaine is illegal.

Attention Deficit Disorder, or ADD, is hard to define due to the fact it encompasses so many differing symptoms. The common traits are usually difficulty to pay attention due to being distracted easily, forgetfulness, inability to process future implications of actions and low or underweight, lean bodies. In some cases, though, instead of distractions being harder to avoid, people will hyperfocus, or not be aware of anything at all but what they are doing, and oftentimes obsess when making conversation. Many cases are in between. The problem falls in the fact that it encompasses such a wide range, there are intermediate cases and unique cases. A link between add and children's depression is theorized due to medications that treat add sometimes causing depression. It also goes the other way around.

Hope this helps, and for more information try finding a good psychologist or psychiatrist and ask if you think you may have it.

ADD is when you cant focus and you don't pay attention all the time when you are suppose to. your mind wanders all the time and you can hardly sit still. you space out a lot more then normal and you have a hard time keeping friends.

Impatiences also is very common.

Here are people answering and sharing their experiences about ADD:

  • I always had a hard time keeping my house clean and organized. I was always cleaning but not getting much done. You know, cleaning in one room and having to go to another room for something and then start cleaning in there...etc...etc...before you know it, not much of anything is done. One day I just said forget it. The messier it got, the more depressed I got and was totally unable to do any cleaning because of the disorganization. I found that if you have ADD, its best to rid of all clutter and I mean all. It makes a world of difference. I told my mom about this, about how it's hard for me to clean because it's so "confusing" and she laughed. She can laugh all she wants cause she has it too, but won't admit to it.

My dad used to ask me if I was doing drugs, which I wasn't.

I will turn on the news to watch the weather only to find myself watching the sports since I had "taken a mind trip" for about 15 minutes. This happens quite frequently. I can even think about the fact that I may do this when I turn on the news so I try to pay attention and It still happens. It's crazy!

I make lists for everything too but can't find them most of the time.

For years I purchased over the counter ephedrine at the gas stations. This made me feel as normal as possible.

I didn't know that I had ADD but I knew that I was different from most others and often have a hard time keeping friends, boyfriends, jobs or anything else for that matter...loosing lots of stuff.

When I get on the Internet all holiness breaks loose cause I can have 20 screens open at a time, going from one topic to another, jotting down notes incessantly.

I really thought I was crazy until I was diagnosed. I was 39 when diagnosed. My daughter has been diagnosed as well. She is 16 and I'm so glad that she won't have to go thru her life thinking she is "less than" because of this condition.

  • I recommend this website: Medical Information. Lots of information here, including symptoms, a screener, etc.
  • Also search for "ADHD" at these other sites: Mayo Clinic and Merck.
  • Frustration, frustration and more frustration! I can't seem to finish anything. Even if I make a list to remind myself I lose the list or forget to take it to the store. I have ideas racing through my head and I am very ambitious, but never accomplish much. I then get depressed and feel hopeless
  • When I was in grade school, I was always running around, even when my teachers forced me to sit down. I was always causing trouble, constantly forgetting to complete and hand in assignments, always daydreaming, and there wasn't a single week that went by without me staying behind for punishment. I had no friends, and my classmates all made fun of me, calling me "the different/naughty kid", and due to my ADHD, I had a very short fuse and always got into fights, getting me into deeper trouble.
  • Now, in High school I switched from Ritalin to Concerta, a slow release medication which works wonders. I have better organization, have plenty of friends and a better grip on my emotions. However, I do occasionally drift off, and my short fuse does go off sometimes (the subject of my annoyance or frustration is usually a slightly annoying girl that has a slightly annoying crush on me) , but I try my best.
Hyper-focus: ADD is less a deficiency of attention than the inability to regulate one's attention mechanism. This is discussed in the book "Driven to Distraction", which I read per my doctor's recommendation. The book describes one almost contradictory symptom of ADD called hyper-focus. It is when one focuses on some task or item of interest to the degree of forgetting everything else going on. It tends to be a very enjoyable state of mind, losing yourself in some enjoyable activity so to speak. The ability to hyper-focus (without stimulant medications) is one of the distinguishing traits of ADD or ADHD. Typically this symptom is present in most people with ADD, myself included. The problem is it tends to occur at random or at least with little conscious control. Whereas having the ability to switch this on and off at will would make for much less of the disaster area (speaking for myself only) that ADHD causes.

It would be unusual for an adult to suddenly get Attention Deficit Disorder as it is usually something that happens in childhood and carries through to adulthood. Adults with ADD / ADHD struggle daily with self-regulation, regulating their attention, regulating their impulses in talking and action, and regulating their emotions.

But this condition needs to be diagnosed by a doctor as there are other disorders that have similar symptoms
you get hyper
You are extremely hyper all the time, get distracted really easily, and like to talk ALOT. Those are the basic symptoms of ADHD.

Does the IQ test of ADHD child shows lower count than his natural count?

Maybe.

Everyone's scores flucuate when taking IQ tests, but an ADHD child's scores will fluctuate even more on a given day, as the disorder fluctuates in intensity. Also, especially as the child matures, his/her English scores will most likely continue to drop. Visual-spatial capabilities are more likely to be higher than average, however.

What medication is there for ADHD inattentive type?

The same ones for ADHD hyperactivity sub-type such as Adderall, Vyvanse, Concerta, Strattera, etc. Sometimes antidepressants such as Prozac can aid in the inattentive subtype as well.

When I was at the doctor he told me that I have anxiety and ADHD and he sead that I must go on Strattera it worked but it was to expensive to go on it for a year can Strattera be given as chronic?

Sure, most drugs can be prescribed for extended periods of time. Certainly antidepressants (Strattera is a failed antidepressant) are prescribed as such. No studies have examined the long-term effects of Strattera, and therefore it is not recommended that Strattera be used in the long-term. In fact, the Strattera drug information specifically states,"Strattera is not for long-term use." Be careful with drugs like Strattera (antidepressants in general): their specific effects on the brain and their long-term effects are not well-known. These drugs can permanently alter your brain chemistry and cause a variety of secondary effects (for which you'll be prescribed more medications). Of course, this is just my opinion, and it is based on anecdotal evidence. Be cautious.

Did he get teased for having ADHD?

Many individuals with ADHD do experience teasing or bullying, particularly during childhood and adolescence, as their behaviors may be misunderstood by peers. This teasing can stem from a lack of awareness about ADHD and its impact on behavior and learning. It's important for educators and parents to foster understanding and support to create a more accepting environment for those with ADHD. With proper guidance, individuals can learn to navigate social challenges and build resilience.

What does adult ADHD mean?

ADHD NOS means NOT OTHERWISE SPECIFIED. IT refers to a category of diagnosis for people who have some prominent symptoms of hyperactivity, inattention or impuslivity, but who don't meet the full diagnostic criteria for ADHD. Basically, it is a garbage-can diagnosis for people who don't meet the full criteria but have some symptoms.
So, does this mean that I'm not adhd? I saw a psychologist that diagnosed me adhd nos. I have found myself to be extremely impulsive. Now I'm doubting the validity of my diagnosis that took me 2 years to get the courage to seek help.Any thoughts?
Although I have never seen the notation I can immediately identify with the problem.
Little stoty here.... 20 years ago I was diagnosed as having having symptoms of dyslexia but not specifically dyslexia. At first I was glad to be diagnosed - because the medical profession said I had a condition. That is, I wasn't just a bad or undiscipled kid. However, I was very quickly disappointed with the diagnosis and ended up with nothing. No support, no meds, just a feeling that I had to cope with "it".
Well, 15 difficult years later I learn that maybe it could also be ADD.... I was tested and put on meds for ADD.
My life didn't get better even though my work performance and efficiency tripled.
After seeking meds, for 3-4 yrs, giving up for more than a year and starting over....
I am finding that my problems with distractions, concentration AND impulsiveness are related to obsessive behavior (obsessive thinking) of the Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)variety. Prior treatment included stimulant based drugs for ADD and some Prozac for anxiety - but in the long run - while I could do 10 things at once - I drove everyone crazy with too many new ideas and my bad temper....
So now with Prozac to retard obsessive behavior (and ward off mild depression too) and non-stimulant Stattera I think I am moving ahead on the right path.
I am just getting started on the Straterra and think its great! I expect that the dosages will be adjusted over time - but that we'll get it right now.
Seems that 20 years ago ADD was underdiagnosed and Prozac wasn't widely known.

Child is very unattentive in school but not hyper Will caffeine help her be more alert She has add and asks lackodaisucal?

Many parents who are hesitant at giving their children psychostimulants to help treat ADHD have used coffee. There are many websites with annecdotal stories on the effectiveness of such treatments. Many parents and adults feel more comfortable using coffee as compared to perscriptions and have believed it to be successful.

You can do an internet search on "using coffee to treat ADHD" to read different testamonies and suggested dosages and times.

How can you tell if a baby has Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder?

If your infant is male. That's a pretty good sign. I'm not being altogether facetious. Most ADD patients are male. Much of normal boy behavior fits the description of ADD. It's just that we've created a society and education system that can't tolerate it.

I'm not saying there is not a real ADD, just that there is a lot less of it than we think. It's a collection of behaviors, which can have any number of root causes including environmental, rather than an illness like a heart problem or an infection, so there's not a screening test, and I don't think it's possible for an infant to "have" ADD. A child who doesn't hear well might be susceptible to ADD. Of course, so might a child who is particularly intelligent or creative. DaVinci and Einstein may well have had ADD by today's standards. What a tragedy if they had been "cured".

What I'm saying is, you have enough to make you anxious about your baby as it is. You need not add concern about ADD. The risk of ADD will come as much from lifestyle choices you make as from anything organic. A helpful book, not only for issues of ADD, but for many other issues of development, is "Why Gender Matters" by Leonard Sax.

Sociopathy, (or as it's officially called, ASPD) is a mental disorder charecterized by failure to conform to social norms, deception, impulsiveness, irritability and aggressiveness, reckless disregard for safety of self or others, irrisponsibilty, and most importantly a lack or remorse or empathy.

Sociopathy in and of itself is not a crime, most sociopaths are able to live completely fine lives without commiting crimes or getting arrested. That being said, the symptoms of sociopathy, including those listed above, make it very easy to resort to crime, which is why such a large percentage of people in jail, (sometimes up to %50) are sociopaths.

Can a child age 19 with bipolar disorder and ADHD make his own decisions?

ADHD and bipolar disorder are generally not conditions severe enough to require a legal guardian. Adults with ADHD can live very interesting and productive lives working and starting successful business. It is not uncommon for ADHD to be accompanied by a higher than normal IQ. In fact, people with ADHD often have strengths that are not present in the general population: creativeness, high energy, imagination, willingness to take risks, a tendency toward the more unusual, the ability to hyper focus on a task or project, etc.

He might need extra support but should have the opportunity to make his own decisions. At 19 he is no longer a child.

Can ADHD be overcome?

Yes, I overcame ADHD. I was diagnosed as being hyperactive as a child in the 80's and drove all my school teachers crazy. My parents did not want to give me drugs because they wanted a more permanent solution and did not want to dull my creativity. Instead my parents turned to natural solutions for curing my ADHD.

They taught me Transcsendental Meditation, and also where carefully to remove all food with additives especially colorants) from my diet. Gradually over several years I became more and more focused, and caused less trouble.

I still believe I have an ADHD type of brain, but that is not really a bad thing, because I believe it gives me more creativity I have been able to overcome the bad ADHD symptoms and am able to focus and get things done, but I still have the benefit of more creativity.

I still practice Transcendental Meditation twice a day and am still carefully to avoid junk food.

If you have ADHD you should know this, it's not really a disease, you just have a brain that functions slightly differently If you take drugs you might get better focusing ability but your going to destroy a lot of the extra creativity you might otherwise have had. Think of what you have as a gift that you just need to harness.

One other thing I have noticed that has really helped me stay focused and calm is regular exercise, especially weight lifting. I am not 100% sure why weight lifting helps more than other sports, but for me it seems to.

Can high energy children be mistaken for ADHD?

ADHD should only be diagnosed by a professional. Frank Barnhill, M.D., author of Mistaken for ADHD, listed nearly 50 conditions in his book that can be mistaken for ADHD.

Dr. Barnhill said irritability, hyperactivity, poor memory and bad grades are classic ADHD symptoms, but they can be also symptoms of sleep apnea, thyroid disorders, food allergies, seizures and learning disabilities.

ADHD diagnoses are rising at nearly 3% per year according to the Centers For Disease Control, which could mean as many as 9 million kids with ADHD in 2010.

Accommodation in classroom for ADHD learners?

This is a herd one, because no matter if you have ADHD or not, you learn differently from everyone else. I have ADHD and I will take the information someone gives me and interpret it so that I understand it. My preschool teacher would say "Oh, she will be in a pretzel upside down and I'll ask her what I said, and she'll repeat it word for word!" this bugs a lot of my teachers. But as someone with ADHD matures, I think that it gets easier for them to learn in a normal school environment. try looking into different learning styles.
