The U.S. Capital was in New York City in 1789-90. Alexander Hamilton had an extensive financial system that he needed Congress to pass. One element that faced resistance was the assumption of state debt. The resolution worked out between Hamilton, Jefferson, and Madison was that State Debt Assumption would be allowed to pass and the national capital would head to Philadelphia for 10 years with the permanent site where it is today. New Yorkers were furious with Hamilton, but he felt it was the best for the nation and it proved to be so. As our credit record improved with Hamilton's economic system, New York City became a top financial capital of the world! D.C. was a priority for the Virginians and it ended up giving the capitol a place to grow and at least more centralized among the original set of states.

At the start of the Civil War, northern newspaper described him as "the Strongest Man in the South". Stephens and Confererate President Davis did not agree on many issues. Stephens wanted peace more than war. Stephens was one of the three Confederate commissioners who met with President Lincoln on the steamer River Queen at Hampton Roads Conference, in an effort to bring an end to the Cilvil War. Even though by the time of the Civil War, Stephens own 34 slaves and several thousands of acres but, Stephens was still considered generous by many and he personally paid for the education of over a hundred students black, white, male and female. His charity left him near penniless when he died in March 4th, 1983

Most of the states, when independence was declared in 1776, set up state constitutions which included a bill of rights. Eleven years later, the national constitution was focused on strengthening the nation with a few well-defined responsibilities. Many, including Madison and Hamilton, felt that all rights were retained by the people and trying to list some would indicate that any not listed would not be guaranteed. So the ninth amendment was constructed to overcome that concern which stated "The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people." After that, most people supported the Bill of Rights which were ratified in 1791.
Many were seriously concerned about a lack of a Bill of Rights...others used it as a reason to not ratify the U.S. Constitution because they sincerely feared a stronger national government than the Articles of Confederation that were proposed in 1777 and ratified in 1781.

Recently, the Alexander Hamilton Awareness (AHA!) Society has been holding annual events during July, as well as on his birthday on January 11th. This year they had a video connection from Hamilton's birthplace on the small island of Nevis in the Caribbean to his adopted home in NYC. Cakes were cut simultaneously by the Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis as well as the 5th Great Grandson of Alexander Hamilton. Last July (2012), they held 15 events to "Celebrate Hamilton".
