Did the ancient Greeks have nobles and aristocrats?

The aristocrats were the largr landowners who displaced the kings and ruled until they were displaced by the tyrants who were installed by the lower classes to govern fairly for them. When the lower classes got tired of the tyrants authoritarianism, they brought in democracy. Often the democracies failed to function effectively, and tyrants and aristocrats returned in various cities. Then the kings returned after Alexander the Great died. As so the world has gone on with various cycles of political control, even to today.

How was Rome's geography different than that of Greece?

Both the Romans and the Greeks shared the Mediterranean but were separated by time, rather than geographical borders.

You see the Roman Empire (30 B.C. to 1450 A.D.) encircled the entire Mediterranean Sea (including modern day Greece). The empire stretched from Britain to Spain, the North shores of Africa to Egypt, from modern day Iran to Turkey, and across most of modern day Western Europe.

The Greek Empire (400 B.C. - 120 B.C.) was rather small until King Alexander of Macedon (Alexander the Great) spread the kingdom from the Greek mainland and Egypt east across the Persian Empire.

However, the Geography of Italy varies greatly from that of Greece. Italy is, for the most part landlocked. As a peninsula it has much water frontage but the mainland cities are mostly inland. Greece is much more spread across vast archipelagos and has been known to be rocky. Each country has its share of mountains, cliffs, hills, and fertile soils.

Nearly two hundred cities, mainly around the Aegean and Black Seas and the Islands, which originally were part of the anti-Persian Delian League, which Athens turned into an empire after the Persian threat subsided, converting the annual levy for defence to its own private use. The funds were collected ruthlessly by force if necessary. The funds were also used to finance the Athenian navy which did this collecting each year.

Three cities did not pay, as they maintained ships to augment the Athenian fleet - Samos, Lesbos and Chios. The first to be dealt with was Naxos; others followed. Eventually Samos also resisted and was captured and punished.

What effect did the two great conflicts of the fifth century- the Persian war and Peloponessian war- have on Greek civilization?

The Persian War outcome provided Athens with an empire from the coalition it had formed to finally defeat the Persian threat. It misused the resources of this coalition to spend on itself and so could afford to promote art, culture and building.

It also over-promoted its own power on the proceeds of the empire, leading to the Peloponnesian War with the Spartan alliance, which devastated Greece, lost Athens its empire and reduced it to a second-rate power. Greece did not recover and became a target for dominance by Macedonia.
