Animal Parasites

Animal parasites refer to the common parasites that afflict animals, such as worms, ticks, mites, lice, and fleas. Animal parasites come in two varieties, external and internal, and can be very troublesome for the animal, sometimes leading to severe illness or death. There are often treatment options for these parasites, but the best way avoid exposure is for animals to receive regular veterinary care.

Why is there green pus coming out your dogs tick wound?

Green pus indicates an infection. It's possible your puppy has Conjunctivitis, or another eye infection. Your puppy should be examined by a veterinarian, and probably requires medication to clear up the infection.

Conjunctivitis is easily treated, but it's important to diagnose and treat conjunctivitis in quickly, to avoid serious risks such as visual impairment. If left untreated, the infection that caused conjunctivitis slowly spreads to other parts of the eyes damaging the puppy's eyesight.

How do you check cat for ring worm?

I'm by no means a veterinarian but I would consult one if you see/notice any of the following signs: Ringworms are usually caused by dirty catboxes and bacteria that forms from the old fecal matter and excrement. When my cat had them, she would lick at her anus and clean herself in that area very frequently. I am under the impression that once the bacteria forms...the worms appear and start to thrive in your cat's box. Then, they get inside your cat (and can transfer to other pets) and once the tiny white worms excreting from your cat's anus, your cat officially has "ringworm". Watch for the worms in the cat box first. If you can see the white worms (about the size of 1/4 to 1/2 uncooked rice kernel), then the ringworms are pretty serious and you will need/want to consult a veterinarian as soon as possible. Hope this helps you!

(WRONG. You're describing tapeworms but you haven't got your facts straight at all. Tapeworms come from cats eating mice or bugs that contain the larva of the tapeworm. Tapeworms are not transmittable to other animals, even if they eat the actual tapeworm segments that are expelled through the anus. One Drontal pill will eliminate the tapeworm. The worms transmittable through litter boxes--clean or dirty--are roundworms.)

Ringworm is a fungus easily cured with Goldenseal applied to affected areas 2-3 times a day for several days.

Ringworm is NOT a worm at all, it is a fungus closely related to athlete's foot. When a human gets it, it looks like a worm in a circle under your skin, thus the stupid name. If you have any circular scabs on your body, chances are your cat has ringworm (it is highly contagious). Tinactin is great for it. Do not use any type of cortisone even though it might itch - the fungus thrives on it so cortisone actually makes it worse. Another way to tell: many cats with ringworm lose some of the hair above their eyes; it almost looks like they are going bald. My vet puts cats under some kind of black light to see if the fungus glows, but I don't know if that type of light is available to non-commercial places. Worth calling a vet and asking.

The worms that the first answer mentions are actually tapeworms, not ringworm. To add to the second answer, the blacklight the vet uses to check for ringworm is nothing special- you can use any old blacklight from any old store, run it over the cat, and the ringworm, if present, will glow.

Only half of the varieties of ringworm will fluoresce under black light, and lots of other things (blood, medication, dander, etc.) will also fluoresce under black light. The only accurate way to diagnose ringworm is with a skin scraping or culture, unless you've seen it and worked with it before.

A skin wash made of organic goldenseal root powder and spring water is a very safe, effective, quick, and inexpensive way to treat ringworm.

Can you see live worms in feces after deworming a puppy?

It usually happens when they poop after they get the shot. It should be dead worms. Also you sometimes need a two week follow up and possibly another shot. Check into that, otherwise the worms could come back and you'd have to start over. But yes, it is normal to see the worms coming out, your dog is getting rid of them instead of them being inside taking all the nutrition from your dog.

** The worms are not always dead when they come out. After my dog got dewormed, she passed a live roundworm.

Can worms make dogs sick?

Yes, vomiting can be a symptom of "worms".

Your dog may, or may not have other symptoms, such as:

• Visible worms or eggs in fecal matter

• Visible worms in fur, or area around dog's rear

• Scratching or rubbing of rear on the ground

• Bloated looking belly

• Weakness, increased appetite, constant hunger, weight loss

• Diarrhea (could contain blood)

Symptoms for worms can be easily confused with other health problems. If you suspect your dog has worms, it's best to have your dog examined by a vet.

How often should you get a checkup for your dog?

That depends on the size, age, and overall health of your dog but, in general, puppies should see the Vet at least four times during their first year. Adult dogs (generally, anything from 1 to 6 years old) should see the Vet at least once a year. Senior dogs (7 and up) should see the Vet every 6 months. However, if your dog is on certain medications (insulin, carprofen, meloxicam, etc.), monitoring bloodwork may be needed more frequently.

What is wrong if dog eats grass and pukes and has diarrhea?

It could be any number of things, like Paarvo or Distemper. Take your dog to the vet, regardless of the vaccinations it's had! No vaccination is one hundred percent effective, though they certainly do make a big difference in the rates of illness. Paarvo and Distemper are always fatal if not treated quickly.

More advice from the WikiAnswers community...

* My favorite product for fleas and ticks is Front line Plus. It must be applied monthly for control of ticks, and every 3 months just for fleas. * If you are in a desert area you may not need flea medications being the fleas can't survive in dry hot climates. * You can phone your vet for this information totally free. * I have used Program for several years. It comes in small tubes. You cut off the end and pull back the hair between the cat or dog's shoulder blades and place it on their skin and do not rub in. This should be repeated every three to four months. Humans also can bring fleas into the home just from walking on grass. * Vacuuming every two days when there is a flea outbreak is wise and get into those corners of the room as well as these are where the fleas hide out. Put a flea collar into the bag of vacuum. * Vets highly recommend several varieties of flea control and it's best to discuss this matter with them. The labeling on these products may not tell you all you need to know about them. I have found 'Program' to be very affective and very safe on my pets.

Can fleas be spread from human to human?

Yes, this happens all the time. Fleas typically prefer to live on other mammals like dogs and cats because they can hide in the fur coat easier. However, if a human is the only meal they can find, fleas will happily feed on humans with no problem.
A flea would much prefer to live off of the blood of cats, dogs, or other animals, than they would that of a human. It is extremely unlikely for a human to be infested with fleas, but singular flea-bites are not uncommon.

What do you do if the head of a tick is still in dog?

The tick head is a foreign object that the body reacts to the way it would to splinter: redness and swelling, infection, sometimes the presence of pus. This is a process that will eventually--in most cases--force the object out. This process can be aided by digging the tick head out with a flame-sterilized needle and/or trying to grab it with tweezers.
