What is virus and how to protect?

A Virus is a self replicating program which has the ability to duplicate and transfer itself to other computers.

The great grandaddy of all viruses, the Boot sector virus executes itself by infecting the start up processes of a computer. These type of viruses are now considered dinosaurs of the computer age. However recently they had a revival due to the self executing nature of usb memory sticks. This has been resolved in part by motherboard manufacturers switching the feature off as a default.

A Worm is a virus which has the ability to transfer itself across a network to a target machine.

A Trojan is a malicious program which uses a legitimate program to hide in to be transported. A RAT (Remote Access Trojan) is the type which most people are familiar with which allows an attacker to take complete control of a target machine. these types of malicious programs do not self replicate so therefore they are not considered true viruses however they are generalised into the same category by the public.

Bots are networks of infected computers with a form of RAT on them which operate as a swarm. The Bot program is designed to run applications and provide proxy services for criminals. Generally these are used to send SPAM.

Root kits (Known in the late 1990's as Device Driver Trojans) are RATS which have the ability to superceed the operating system and therefore can cloak themselves against detection by applications and the operating system istself.

SpyWare is software which is designed to report back to its creators your activity on the internet.

There are lots more virus/Trojan/Spyware variants which are beyond the scope of this article.

ScareWare

Again not really a virus but a method of getting a user to install malicious software. Scareware will normally report a condition which frightens the user into installing or purchasing a program. It's a social manipulation ploy, not a program itself.

For instance a website may offer to scan your computer for viruses then find hundreds on a previously clean machine. It will then offer to clean these viruses if you just download the tool to do so. Of course the took is usually malicious and in some cases is used to blackmail the user into parting with money to clear the fault.

Antivirus

Antivirus solutions are used to detect and remove viruses, spyware and trojans. They do this using a couple of methods.

The Signature file method

Each program on a computer is made from instructions which are represented as numbers. Take a big enough sample of these numbers and you can cross compare the 'signature' with an unknown file byte by byte until a match (or not) with the sample is achieved.

Hueristic analysis

Hueristics are used to identify unknown types of virus. It does this by not looking at what the file is but at what it does. For instance, a screen saver program is highly unlikely to attempt to erase the hard drive on the computer in its first few lines of code, but a virus might. Or a Trojan might want to open a port to "Phone Home". These activities can be scored and the result can be filtered by a 'sensitivity control' set by the programmer or the user.

Expert opinion votes the best method of preventing infection by malicious programs is to get 'NetWise'. Make sure that you have a functioning antivirus solution from a reputable company. Take a look at your browsing habits.

Criminals favour websites that are highly popular or contain information which will reduce the users resistance to installing their malicious software. Ilegal Peer to peer sharing systems, hacker websites, and porn sites are all favourite targets for criminals who use virus techniques to steal credit card information or proxy machines for further criminal activities.

Avoid these types of websites and file transfers and your reduce the overall risk of becoming infected with a virus.

What is the meaning of the term quarantine in relation to antivirus software?

When anti-virus software quarantines a file it moves it into a reserved section of the hard drive where it cannot execute. Usually it will do this because it has identified it as malware. Generally the quarantined code or file can be moved back to the accessible portion of the drive if the user has identified it as non-malware, but it is rarely advisable to do so. The quarantined file may also be able to be forwarded to the anti-virus company for further analysis if it is not a recognized piece of malware. A final possible action that may be possible is to repair a damaged file that is in quarantine - but again, that usually takes some very special skills to accomplish and the virus protection software was unable to do it - hence sending it to quarantine.

What is the name of the person who invented internet?

No one person invented the internet, many people have been credited with contributing to the internets development. please see link below: No one person invented the internet. Rather it was a complex experiment conjured by many minds collaborating together. Al gore didn't invent the internet, but without his efforts it probably would not have come as far as it had. He helped make the internet score big time and for that he deserves credit. Vint Clef was the mastermind behind the ARPANet and the TCP/IP Protocol suite, which is the mother and formula of the modern internet. His buddy used to be the guy who gave out names and addresses, but he resigned and gave that authority to ICANN. If I had to name one person as the inventor of the Internet it would have to be Vint Clef. He now works for Google under the title of "Chief Internet Evangelist". Tim Berners-Lee In 1980, the Englishman Tim Berners-Lee, an independent contractor at CERN, Switzerland, built ENQUIRE, as a personal database of people and software models, but also as a way to play with hypertext; each new page of information in ENQUIRE had to be linked to an existing page. In 1984 Berners-Lee returned to CERN, and considered its problems of information presentation: physicists from around the world needed to share data, with no common machines and no common presentation software. He wrote a proposal in March 1989 for "a large hypertext database with typed links", but it generated little interest. His boss, Mike Sendall, encouraged Berners-Lee to begin implementing his system on a newly acquired NeXT workstation. He considered several names, including Information Mesh, The Information Mine (turned down as it abbreviates to TIM, the WWW's creator's name) or Mine of Information (turned down because it abbreviates to MOI which is "Me" in French), but settled on World Wide Web. He found an enthusiastic collaborator in Robert Cailliau, who rewrote the proposal (published on November 12, 1990) and sought resources within CERN. Berners-Lee and Cailliau pitched their ideas to the European Conference on Hypertext Technology in September 1990, but found no vendors who could appreciate their vision of marrying hypertext with the Internet. By Christmas 1990, Berners-Lee had built all the tools necessary for a working Web: the first Web browser, WorldWideWeb (which was also a Web editor), the first Web server (info.cern.ch), and the first Web pages that described the project itself. The browser could access Usenet newsgroups and FTP files as well. However, it could run only on the NeXT; Nicola Pellow therefore created a simple text browser that could run on almost any computer. To encourage use within CERN, they put the CERN telephone directory on the web - previously users had had to log onto the mainframe in order to look up phone numbers.

What is another good internet security to use besides norton internet security?

Matousec's Proactive Security Challenge hails a Comodo Internet Security Product as No. 1

AVG Internet Security 8.0 it works well and it doesn't slow down your computer.

McAffee also produces a well regarded internet security product. Kaspersky Labs does too. There are some pretty decent freeware and shareware products that perform almost as well as (or in some people's opinion - better than) the commercial products. Most of the non-commercial products provide less customer support however.

Ways to protect computers from viruses?

# mike # was # here # Save as you work. You should always save your work as you go and learn how to use the 'auto-save' features in your application.

# Make a backup. Before you make changes to critical data always make a duplicate. Even if you just made a backup yesterday - make another.

# Keep a copy of your data offsite. Diligently backing up your data is good practice but keep a copy of your data offsite. If there were a fire or other disaster your onsite data backup could be lost as well.

# Refresh your archives. Years ago you archived your data to a zip drive. Now you decide to use that data as a baseline - are you sure there is still a zip drive that can read your data? As technology changes, it is a good idea to transfer your data to a current data storage standard so that you aren't stuck with irretrievable data. IST provides a backup service.

# Never open email attachments by habit. If your email reader has an option to automatically open attachments you should disable that feature. Always run any attachments and downloaded files through a virus scanner first.

# Never trust disks from other people. Anytime you receive a file on any type of media check it first for viruses!

# Update! Make sure you have the latest updates for your software - especially for your virus checking software. Make it a habit to regularly check for updates and enable automatic updates for software that offers that feature.

# Protect your passwords. Your USERID is your identity. The key to your identity is your password. Anytime your account accesses the network you are responsible for any activity from that account! (See UW Usage Policy). Remember: change your password on a regular basis.

# Protect your computer. Use a secure operating system which requires users to be 'authenticated'. As an added benefit these operating systems also restrict what individual users can see and do on the system.

# Perform regular maintenance. Learn how to use the utilities that diagnose your system for problems. It is a good idea to run a disk-scanning program, defragment your harddrive, or whatever else your system might need. These utilities can prevent little problems from becoming big problems, and will keep your system running at top speed. If you need help with a big problem IST has a Hardware Repair Service.

Where can I find free updated security software?

  • Most of the time internet security suites are uniquely not free. But you have got to remember they are are suppose to be the wall between you and all malware threats and other threats. If you want to try internet security you can download a trial of an internet security program. However in my professional opinion most of the time you don't need such a suite. You just need a program that is strictly anti malware. Internet Security suites tend to be heavy on your system and make your computer almost unusable.
  • There are Internet Security suites that actually run faster because of the way they are programmed. Using only anti malware software will not make your data secure, will not hide your location and will not make your travels on the Internet private. Also using only VPN, or Proxy or Encryption will not protect you as fully as an Internet Security Platform that uses multiple technologies in concert to protect your identity, data and activities.

Do you ave to be connected to the internet to do a virus scan?

No. Your Computer does NOT have to be connected to the Internet to run a virus. Any contaminated or corrupt file can infect your computer any time it is open, run, or executed. The Internet is just one of many ways a virus can be 'run', started, opened, or spread. One common source not direct from the Internet is through USB (although the source may have be originated from the Internet.

Is it safe to download a trial version of free antivirus software?

Don't use free trials. You only use a trial to test out whether or not you want to buy it. There is plenty of free and/or open source software out there, there is no need to try and use free trials.

Now you can get decent protection for free.

Free AV, there are lists of them, but i like avast ( http://avast.com ). It has good real time protection, pre-boot scanner, auto-sandboxing, and the scan detection/removal rate isn't bad. Could try MSE or Avaria as those are 2 other good ones.

Free malware scanner, malwarebytes ( https://malwarebytes.org/products/malwar… ). Its a scanner the can detect/remove pretty much anything. viruses, malware, spyware, adware. And has the highest detection/removal rates in the category. Even paid AV support has been known to tell you to download this to get rid of infections.

Free firewall, comodo ( https://personalfirewall.comodo.com/ ) make sure you are getting just the firewall and not the av. The firewall is free.

If you can take it a step further and get sandboxie ( http://www.sandboxie.com/ ) to choose to run programs in a virtual environment, so they cant do damage to your computer. You can run programs you don't trust in it. Also you can run your web browser in it, so you will be unaffected by any drive-by downloads that can infect you.

To also help I would suggest browser addons.

WOT (tells you website ratings based on peoples feedback. can help you avoid shady/phishing sites).

Adblocker plus (blocks ads/popups, which can help you not end up going to bad sites by mistake).

browser protect (helps prevent browser hijacking/redirecting)

Most all infections are gotten from either just plain ignorance or through file sharing. Well eliminating file sharing eliminates majority of possible infections.
