Do velvet ants live in Indiana?
I would say yes. July 3 2012 I spotted a large red ant that looked different than any of the large red ants around here. I was planting some sprouted pumpkin seeds in the field. I pressed a small twig down upon the ant & there came its stinger trying to sting its way free. I was surprised to see what I had discovered since I have never seen a fire ant here in central Indian in the past 30 years living here. Even as a kid when I would play in the field with toy cars & tractors I never spotted ant like this one. So yes, fireants are here in central Indiana. I'm not sure how many but if there is one, there has to be a nest somewhere close by.
They are not necessarily black or red; some are both and some are neither; many are brown, some of them very light brown and some quite dark brown. Some, especially those living in the dark, are a pale yellow colour.
As for why they are commonly black or red, the black colour may be useful for absorbing warmth or protecting the animal from ultraviolet. However, especially large species, conspicuously coloured in red or black or both, and with typical conspicuous ant-like behaviour, would be likely to scare off creatures that might otherwise attack them. It would be a warning that these creatures are ants, likely to bite or sting or have a sharp smell, and to attack in their thousands, so that they would be best left alone.

First of all, buy or build an ant farm. The next step is definitely get a hold on ants. You can order them, but the fastest way would be catching them yourself. Put some sugar and water in a jar and wait for ants to arrive. Very important is to catch a queen. Most colonies won't last more than a couple of months without one. Now you only have to feed and care for your ants. This way the colonies will grow and the farm will be at health.
Other queen ants of course! A queen ant will sometime lay eggs that will develop into new queens that, once hatched, will leave their birth nests and go and start their own.
Yes, ginger repels ants.
Specifically, the plant in question (Zingiber officinale) contains essential oils which have their role as natural repellents and in traditional medicine. Terpineol is one such oil. Depending upon which isomer is involved, terpineol may be used in perfumes or in repellents. It will be even more effective than the active ingredient carbaryl in suppressing ants when they behave as garden and household insect pests.
What are some adjectives that describe an ant and begin with the letter A?
Verbs are not describing words. Verbs are words for being or doing.

Some adjectives that might describe an ant are:
a bullet ant eats the dirt that is around them unlike normal ants!
Kind of, it mostly keeps them from coming/coming back.
Edit: Borax is the active ingredient in a number of commercial ant killing products, including Terro Liquid Ant Baits. It interferes with their metabolism, but kills relatively slowly, so that the bait is transported back to the colony and distributed to other ants. I don't know what concentration of household borax would be required to kill pests, but the stuff IS used commercially for this purpose.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Some places on the internet say to mix 20 Mule Team borax with sugar. I always found it was sufficient just to sprinkle some in their trails without mixing it with anything. It takes about a week. I had ants in the kitchen this spring. I found what I assume WAS the nest, but I have no more ants. Is all I did is sprinkle some borax along the kitchen baseboards. This doesn't work with carpenter ants in my experience.
