Why do apples bruise when dropped?

When an apple bruises, cells split open and chemicals called phenols, within the cell oxidize and turn brown. Phenols oxidize even faster in the presence of an organic chemical called ethylene, a chemical produced by bananas during ripening.

So if you were to place a banana next to an apple, once you have initiated the bruising process, the ethylene gas being produced by the banana will speed up the chemical reaction producing a more pronounced bruise. You may find large "bruise" marks within days.

What kind of thorny bush produces apples?

I'm looking for the identity of this bush which grows in my southern Ohio lawn. It's currently 5'X4', thorny limbed, and periodically the leaves will become red tipped. The fruit looks strikingly like a golf-ball sized granny smith apple with a slight pink blush to it. The "apples" grow directly from the thorns late in summer/fall and are smooth on the surface as an apple would be. Any ideas would be appreciated.

What will happen if a apple tree has no flowers in a year?

It would not make apples nor seeds.

If this is a temporary or once-in-a-while situation - such as a heavy late frost during blooming period that kills off the flowers or flower buds - that tree will not bear fruit that year.

If this is a long-term situation affecting all apple trees in an area or region, then the apple trees will eventually die out in those areas because there are no future generations to sustain the species - or the trees will evolve into something else.

Will 3 seeds from an apple grow an apple tree?

If the conditions are right, yes. However, all you need is one seed for one tree. Three seeds can potentially produce three trees. If three seeds are planted right next to each other, it is unlikely that any of them will mature into fruiting trees because their roots will not have enough space.

Why do some apples have no seeds in them?

If you were to cut an apple in half cross sectionally you would find that an apple has five compartments. Each of these compartments should include a seed in order for the apple to be full sized and well shaped as the seeds produce hormones which allow the fruit to develop. Fruit which lack seeds often abort from the tree in times of stress. Varieties can have more than one seed in each carpel depending on the health and vigor of the tree. The healthier a tree is, the more potential seed the fruit can have per carpel.

If you want to produce a certain type of apple it is not probable to do this by planting a seed from the wanted type. The seed will have DNA from the apple that the seeds came from, but it will also have DNA from the apple flower that pollinated the seeds, which may well be a different type. This means that the tree which would grow from planting would be a mixture of two. In order to grow a certain type of apple, a small twig, or 'scion', is cut from the tree that grows the type of apple desired, and then added on to a specially grown stump called a rootstock. The tree that grows will only create apples of the type needed.

*Plants usually produce far more seeds than are needed. This is because many seeds don't survive and grow to maturity.
