What size do aquariums come in?

Everything from 1 gallon, which are pretty much useless except for one goldfish to 100+ gallons. Standard sizes sold commonly are 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 29, 50, 55, 100 gal and even larger to the 200 gallon variety. Larger than that are usually custom made to order and can be purchased by contacting your local pet shop and giving them the specifics of what you want.

The variety of sizes also extends to a variety of shapes. Improved: anything below 8 gallons is generally useless for any fish. Especially goldfish who need tanks or ponds 55 gallons or larger when full grown. The smallest tank should be about 8 gallons and should house no more than 3 inches of fish. The one inch per gallon rule goes by volume of fish, not total lenght. For example: if you have a goldfish 5 inches long, 1 inch wide, and 2 inches tall its 5x1x3=15 gallons. I would add about 20% to that size just to make sure. But you also have to consider factors such as the size the fish will be when full grown and how tolerant the fish is to overcrowding in a tank.

What can I do to make the High levels of ammonia and nitrite go down?

When there are ammonia & nitrites in your tank, it means that your tank is not fully cycled. When it is fully cycled, you will begin to see some nitrates, but this also needs to stay under 10ppm.

While your tank is cycling, make sure that you do a 50% water change every week, more if your tank is over-stocked, too small, or not enough filtration.

Also, when you add new water to the tank, make sure that you add the recommended dosage of water conditioner such as Prime or Amquel+

How does one install a fish tank in a wall?

There are special fish tanks made for installing in a wall. There are online instructional videos on YouTube and at Yahoo Videos. One main consideration is allowing room at the top to clean the tank, put in or remove fish and feed them.

What is best position for fluval 2 plus filter in aquarium?

I would place the filter in a back corner facing the outlet water stream along the back. This should create a small current in the tank. Please remember that once the filter is cycled and it needs cleaning, only rinse one of the filter pads. Then next time, do the other pad and so on alternating them. That way you will not loose all your good bacteria.

Where can one purchase a corner fish tank?

Petsmart and Petco should have them. You can also check out your local directory and see if there are any specialty fish tank shops in your town. You can probably get a better selection at a local based shop.

Where does a thermometer go in an aquarium?

This depends on the type of thermometer you are using. The stick-on type (which are less accurate) can be placed mid-way between the top & bottom at one side.

If it's a suction cup type, you should place it at the opposite end away from your heater (if you have one)

How to sanitize a water tank?

Start with an almost full and fresh water tank. Turn the water heater off and let the water cool. Dilute 1/4 cup of household bleach for each 15 gallons of tank capacity in to a gallon of water. Add the chlorine or water solution to the water tank. (Do not pour straight bleach into the RV fresh water tank. ) Let the chlorinated water run through them for 1 or 2 minutes one faucet at a time. You should be able to smell the chlorine. Make sure you are using the water pump and not an external water supply. Top off the RV fresh water tank and let stand for at least three hours over night is better. Drain the system completely by flushing the faucets for several minutes each. Open the fresh water tank drain valve to speed up emptying the tank. Open the hot water tank drain plug and drain until it is empty. Close all valves and faucets and drain plugs. Fill water tank with fresh water. Flush each faucet for several minutes each repeating until the tank is again empty. (Make sure you are using the water pump and not an external water supply.) Fill the tank again. The water should now be safe to drink but if the chlorine odor is too strong you can repeat the fresh water flush. Your RV fresh water system should now be safe to use.

Tropical fish survive in cold water?

Most tropical fish will die if left for extended time in cold water. Some tropical fish may be able to tolerate cold water, but the result would likely be early death and disease.

Will a house sponge hurt a aquarium?

Quick Answer: YesLong Answer: Depends (read on)

If it contains cleaning chemicals then using it on the inside or outside of a tank can cause serious problems and possibly kill living things in your aquarium. Even trace chemicals from rinsed cleaning supplies or buckets can seriously harm the aquarium ecosystem. If it is fresh out of the package and contains no cleaning chemicals, scents, or antibacterial properties then I would say it is safe. I have used scotch pads in an aquarium before.

Items to keep away from an aquarium
  • Ammonia based cleaners (Windex)
  • Petroleum based cleaners (Pledge)
  • Antibacterial anything (including hand soap on your hands)
  • heavy metals (example: lead, iron that rusts, nickle..)
  • soapy hands, lotion hands
  • Baby wipes
  • Items you wouldn't put in your mouth or swallow is a good rule of thumb. (once it goes in the tank then use it for the tank only. Don't put stuff in your mouth especially after it goes in the tank.)
Cleaners that are okay for aquarium parts before storage
  • All of the chemicals mentioned here are not for general cleaning, but for take down or pre-setup cleaning. Standard water and aquarium use only cleaning materials should be used for removing algae and other fish waste.
  • Bleach (10% to 2% or less solution, NOT FOR FISH OR ANY PART OF HABITAT, thoroughly rinse before use)
  • Lime Juice (not for habitat, thoroughly rinse)
  • Vinegar (not for habitat, thoroughly rinse)
  • Clean Cloth
  • scratch proof scrubbers with no chemicals
  • anything that does not contain or leave behind the things listed to keep out of aquarium.
  • when in doubt use room temperature water only.

*Do not clean your filters, glass, and ornaments at the same time as this may cause your biological filter to stop converting deadly nitrites (look up nitrogen cycle)

**Simply vacuum your gravel during monthly tank maintenance and try not to disturb it heavily.

***Fish rely on what we consider a dirty environment to survive. Take away that bacteria and all the grime and it would be like taking clothes away from you. Balance between aesthetically pleasing aquarium and what "dirt/grime" is good for your fish is what a beginner clean freak should be worried about.

Sorry I got carried away here.

I have a 180g aquarium that is 21 inches deep and 24 inches high. Do they make aquarium dividers that are about 21 inches x 24 inches?

Tank dividers for large tanks are nearly impossible to find. I would recommend you buy a lighting grid from a local hardware store. From there you can cut the lighting grid to the correct size to fit into your tank. I have done this myself and it works great. I have also seen it done at fish stores with larger tanks.

Can you keep tropical fish in a cold water fish tank?

The only difference between a cold water tank and a tropical tank is the temperature of the water. There is no other difference. Different species of tropical fish require different temperatures. The range is from around 65F for Whitecloud Mountain Minnows up to around 85F for Discus cichlids. Not all tropical fish, however need to be in a heated fish tank. For example, sword tails have been adapted to live in cold water.

The basic rules for keeping fish are as follows:1 inch of fish needs a minimum of 1 gallon of water, every tank needs a fully cycled filter running permanently, every tank needs to have at least 25% of its water replaced every week. If you keep to those rules, your fish has quite a strong chance to live a long happy life. All fish are different and some might be born as weak or unhealthy ones and may pass away no matter how well you keep them. If you don't follow these rules, your fish can be guaranteed to have constant problems with their health.

What causes an aquarium to fog up?

Overfeeding, and not chaning the water enough. That fog is a combination of phosphates and ammonia, which comes from decomposing wasted food and fish waste. You should change about 20% of the water once a week, and make sure to remove any uneaten food from the tank. When you change the water, you should age it for 24 hours to evaporate chloramines, you should also use a water conditioner.

If it is fogging up quickly, such as every couple of days, change the gravel or use a gravel vac, there may be waste trapped in the rocks.

How do you get crystal clear water in my aquarium tank?

Provide a good filter and do not overfeed or overstock your tank.

Weekly water changes of 20-40% are necessary as well.

What is the best product to use to clean a fish aquarium?

To clean a fish aquarium, follow these steps: 1) First scrape off any algal bloom from the inside of the glass. You can either use a long-handled scraper for this, or a magnetic block-scraper which has an abrasive 'inner half' that is moved by hand from the outside. These are less messy and don't make a scraping noise, but are not as manoevurable as a long-handled scraper- the choice is yours which you buy. 2) Do a part water-change using a vacuum syphon. Syphon pumps are available that drain the water out of the tank, and are equipped with a wide nozzle at one end that you can push into the gravel at the bottom of the tank to vacuum out all the collected 'gunk' (i.e. fish faeces, old bits of food, rotted weed etc.) These will also remove old water in the process- remove half to 2/3rds of the old water (NO MORE!) and drain it into a bucket or similar. 3) Replace with cold clean water for goldfish, VERY SLIGHTLY tepid water for tropical freshwater fish. Immediately after doing this, add an 'aqua-safe' additive to remove the harmful mineral deposits found in tap water (these are fine for us, but can be harmful to the fish). There are a number of different makes on the market- I am based in England, where brands include Tetra and King British, but there is also a very good US brand called Doc Wellfish that I've used. If you ask at your aquatics supplier for additive to make tap-water safe, they'll know what you need. Make sure that you add the exact amount stated on the bottle. 4) Finally, if you have live weed in the tank, check this for signs of decay- remove any skanky leaves or (if necessary) whole plants, and replace with new. ...and there you are! A clean, healthy tank!! On average, it should be done about once every 6 weeks.

How can you keep aquariam water clean?

If you observe and keep to the following basics you should not have to worry about dirty water. The basic rules of successfull fishkeeping are :- 1 inch of fish needs a minimum of 1 gallon of water. :- Every tank needs a permanently running cycled filter. :- Every tank needs at least 50% of its water replaced every week. Most tropicals should be kept between 70F and 85F. (heater needed). They should be fed in the morning and evening as much good quality food as they can eat in 15 minutes. Food must never be left to rot in a tank. It will poison the water. If you follow the above rules your fish could do well but if you don't I can guarantee that they will be constantly getting sick and giving you worries.

How narrow can a fish tank be with out negleting the fish?

Ii is advisable to have a broader aquarium than one with height.

Can fish live in half distilled half tap water?

You should not use distilled water in a fish tank as it is missing vital minerals. Distilled water is basically water collected from steam

What if your fish died and it only lasted a week did i feed it too much or not clean its bowl?

If you had a goldfish in a bowl, this would be why it died. One goldfish needs a 20 gallon tank on it's own with a filter.
It's not only the fact that they can grow very big, but also because they are very messy fish that produce a lot of waste.
If you only have room for a bowl, you can consider one betta fish making certain to change it's water every few days.

Can you add salt in a neon tetra tank?

no. the reason is because they r not saltwater fish. they r tropical.

Could I put this in my tank 10 platy 10 molly 3 angelfish 1 snail 10 guppy 1 clown loach 10 cardinal tetra 1 pleco 1 eel 1 frog 10 danio 1 goldfish?

No.

3 Angelfish often become 2 Angelfish as two bond and kill the third wheel.

Clown Loaches are shoaling fish which take about 15 years to get full grown, but full grown is 10"-12" and they need a minimum of a 6ft long tank. They are prone to a number of parasites and infections if not kept in immaculate conditions. They would also eat the snail.

Danios are fin nippers and very fast, they would fin nip the Angelfish and steal most of the food.

10 Platys and 10 Mollies would quadruple in number very quickly, such is the way with livebearers.

What species of Pleco? What species of Eel? There are a number of species with a huge range of needs. With the Eel, Spiny Eels tend to eat fish smaller than they are.

Goldfish are completely incompatible, they are coldwater fish, the rest of the fish are tropical.
