Is a 'crossbow' really a bow?

Crossbow
For practical purposes, yes, a crossbow is really a bow. It uses a short arrow, technically called a bolt, by means of the spring action caused by releasing the tension on the crossbow's limbs. The "bow" of the crossbow is called a "prod".

It differs from a traditional bow however, in that it can be drawn before it is needed and kept ready to use for a considerable period of time. Holding a "regular" bow, such as a self-bow, longbow, recurve, or compound bow at full draw for any length of time may not be feasible, depending on draw weight. Traditional bows (recurves, longbows, etc), unlike modern compound bows, often do not have sights while modern crossbows do; this, coupled with the fact that it doesn't cause a lot of strain on the shooter to hold the crossbow at a full draw, makes it easier for an unskilled individual to use the weapon. The crossbow can be cocked either manually by simply pulling the string back, or by mechanical means - which means handicapped persons can use crossbows in those states which allow their use. Most crossbows sold today have about the same arrow speed as compounds: about 330 - 350 ft/sec.

While the crossbow is a bow, it offers a great advantage over Traditional bows. It should also be noted, so does the modern compound bow. In the 1970's there was a debate whether or not compound bows should be allowed for hunting. State-by-State, compound bows were allowed, and today more than 80% of all bow hunters use compound bows; this is an approximation, of course, as the use of Traditional bows (and arrows) has been increasing. Overall, the acceptance of compounds has been good for archery. Now with more and more crossbows being sold, crossbow hunters are asking why they can not also be included in the archery season, because compounds and crossbows have such similar performance.

The answer to that question is that the modern crossbow is so easy to use; some claim that it is more like using a rifle than a bow. Modern crossbows tend to incorporate the camming (the "wheels" at the ends of the bow-limbs) which makes the compound bow easier to use than Traditional bows.

The Chinese developed a repeating crossbow, where a new bolt would drop onto the rails of the crossbow each time the string (called a "cable", due to its thickness) was pulled back to the "ready" position (cocked, ready to use). The real trick would be to keep the bolt-hopper loaded - and have each bolt facing the correct direction in the hopper.

During the Middle Ages, the crossbow was taken to sometimes extreme designs. Weapons such as the Arbalest and the ballista are basically over-sized crossbows. Of course, crossbows were also slightly simpler in design back then; see the weblink ("Torneo della Balestra") under "Related Links" for some photos of (possibly)the oldest-surviving Crossbow Society in the Modern World.

What are crossbows made of?

They were typically made from a wooden stock, which was afixted to one of three different bows. the earliest bows for crossbows were called self-bows and were simply wooden bows attached to the stock. After that, the saracens developed making a crossbow with a composite bow made from a combination of horn and wood. Finally, the bows were made out of steel.

Can you still use archery equipment while on felony probation?

That depends on state law, doesn't it? In Georgia it's not a "crime" for a person on probation to have archery equipment, but it MIGHT BE a violation of the terms and conditions of their probation. Just like an adult over 21 drinking beer or hanging around a bar-- it's not illegal, but it probably is a violation of probation that can get the person in trouble with the probation officer and the judge that imposed the probation as part of the sentence.

If you're on probation and a term of your probation is "no weapons" then I'd say to stay away from bows and arrows too. They are probably considered weapons even if you only intend to use them for the sport of target practice.

How old is cate archer?

Cate Archer is a character in 'No-one Lives Forever' 1 and 2. Sshe is a spy in h.a.r.m.s way, if you want to check it out go on you tube and type nolf 1 or 2. Nolf is a small sentence for no one lives forever, so go on youtube and type nolf 1 all cutscenes, then watch all the cut scenes, then type nolf 2 all cutscenes and you will then know what nolf is all about ! now in nolf 1, Cate Archer was 27, in nolf 2 she is 28, so if there was a nolf 3 in 2010 then she would probably have been 36 by now ! So sad though, I wish she was still 27 !

Do bow and longbow arrows work with crossbows and do crossbow bolts work with bows and longbows?

No and no.

Specifically, arrows for bows are longer and more flexible as a slight flex can improve an arrow's flight, but crossbows would be too powerful and break the arrow.

Crossbow bolts/quarrels are far too short to be used correctly in a bow, as a real archer would never partially draw the bow to shoot an arrow, yet a bolt would not be long enough for the archer to draw back to his or her anchor point (that same place on their face they always draw back to, to make shots powerful and consistent).

How do you make a crossbow?

A crossbow is basically a bow with a stick attached to hold the bow at the ready so you don't have to. Many believe it's incredibly easy for anyone to master a crossbow and shoot with total accuracy. That is the allure of the crossbow. In reality, crossbows like other archery equipment require a learning curve to master. Crossbows are not guns and will never shoot with the speed or power of a high power rifle like the 30/06.

If you want to build one you must decide what your building skills really are. If you don't have many skills or tools, maybe it would be best to just purchase an inexpensive crossbow and use it for a model for anything you may build.

If you decide to build a crossbow there are three things to tackle in your planning. Fist is the bow or "prod" of the crossbow. That's the part that will propel the arrow or "bolt". You can use a small bow or get an actual prod. If there is one part of the crossbow not to skimp on this is it. I've heard of people using leaf springs from cars to power their crossbow. That's a bit overkill and you'll need one hell of a stick to keep that prod cocked. You can also use aircraft aluminum or spring steel.

On the web you can find, "bow making supplies" and purchase the wood and fiberglass backing to make a bow suitable for making your bow. Some of these companies can also provide plans an/or suggestions. Big time saver!

The second thing to concur is the string. This may seem trivial but in fact its just as important as the prod. The String is the means by which the energy from the prod will be delivered to the bolt. Originally Sinew from an animal was used. But lately simple Waxed Nylon thread from Tandy leather will work. You can also use the uber special threads used to make actual bowstrings. I've found the Waxed Thread works just as well and costs a whole lot less. You can look up string making techniques on line.

Last thing to concur is the easiest yet the most complicated, the firing mechanism. There are dozens of ways to fire your crossbow. A simple Internet search will give my many types to choose from. But, if you're serious about making medieval crossbow that fires with accuracy and reliability then you need to make a rolling block crossbow. It's far and above a better design than anything else out there. Pictures for the rolling block and trigger mechanism are all over the net.

There is a brief rundown on making a crossbow. I hope this helped. And if you build one, please be responsible with it!
