What is the origin of essential oils and aromatherapy?

Like many of the "new age" alternative healing methods, aromatherapy has its roots in ancient history. The ancient Greeks and Egyptians used essential oils in perfumery, massage and in aromatherapy, although that may not have been what they called it back then.

The human body absorbs the benefit from essential oils in various ways, not just by inhaling, but also through massage. The constituents of the oils interact with various parts of the brain, stimulating, exciting, soothing, or calming, as they are designed, resulting in an overall healthier person.

Is it dangerous to rub essential oils on feet?

This question needs a two-part answer. If you're asking whether it is more dangerous to rub essential oils on the feet vs. other body parts, then the answer is "no." In fact, as a Certified Aromatherapist, I would consider it safer to rub essential oils on the bottoms of the feet than on other body parts. This is because the feet have thicker tissue, lessening the chance for irritation. That's precisely why many of us recommend applying essential oils to the bottoms of the feet - in addition to being safer, it is also therapeutically very effective.

The second part of my answer has to do with how safe it is to rub ANY essential oils on the body at all, feet or elsewhere. In short, essential oils are NOT created equal. Some can go on the body without being diluted (we call this "neat") - these are Lavender and Tea Tree - some need dilution, and some can't be used at all and are toxic. I consider the soles of the feet to have a wider latitude (or tolerance) for essential oils that can be used "neat." The rule I would follow is this: if an essential is safe for topical use, then it is certainly safe to apply to the bottoms of the feet. Here is a list of essential oils that are generally regarded as safe (GRAS) by the FDA: http://www.libertynatural.com/info/eoinfo/FDA_EO_GRAS.htm. If it is not on this list, then I would not suggest using that essential oil at all, whether on the feet or otherwise.

Peppermint essential oil is listed as Non-toxic and Non-irritant (except in concentration)

The menthol in the oil can cause sensitization in some people.

Essential oils are not generally recommended for use in a neat form (undiluted).

I personally would not recommend ingesting even small amounts of undiluted peppermint essential oil.

Why do pregnant women have to avoid aromatherapy what are the dangers?

I don't think pregnant women should avoid aromatherapy. In fact, aromatherapy can help pregnant women to go through the day. But pregnant women should using essential oils with caution.

It's better not to use essential oils for the first trimester of your pregnancy, except for reducing your morning sickness.

If you want to use essential oils please consult to aromatherapist first.

for further reading you can go to : http://www.aromatherapy-at-home.com/aromatherapypregnancy.html ------------- (Another answer) - Pregnant women don't have to avoid ALL aromatherapy, though it should be used after the first trimester. There are some essential oils that should not be used at all by pregnant women, because they can have an adverse effect on the pregnancy. Contact your local aromatherapist, doula or midwife, who have more specific information (http://www.dona.org). As a doula myself, I've used essential oils during pregnancy to help moms relax. Our strongest sense of memory is related to smell, so if you find a nice blend, diffuse it nightly and take a few minutes to relax. Then, take your blend with you to the hospital (or put a few drops on your pillow) - when you smell it, you will be reminded of relaxing at home...it helps!

Always check with your physician if you have questions, but there's no need to freak out if someone has an aromatherapy candle burning, or if you discover that your body lotion has a tiny amount of an oil in it that you don't want. Just change products while you're pregnant. :)

How do you dilute aromatherapy oils such as lavender oil?

The typically recommended method is to use one to two tablespoons of a base oil, such as Jojoba, Apricot Kernel, Grapeseed, etc., and add as many drops of the lavender as you need.

Lavender is considered a "middle note" in aromatherapy, so you can use anywhere from a few drops up to 10 or 15, depending on your needs.

Do a little more research, as the amounts to be used for environmental (smell-good) aromatherapy differ from the amounts used topically (on the skin), esp. on babies and expectant mothers.
