Who became the president after Franklin d Roosevelt and made the decision to drop the atomic bombs?
President Truman.
Why does the US not use atomic bombs anymore?
because they are unnecessary and would cause way too much destruction then is required against our current enemies
Answer
one reason is because particularly after the cold war the US reduced its stockpile of atomic and nuclear weaponry in a deal with the russians.
Answer
Because, after their use on Japan, the full implications of nuclear weapon usage became apparent to everyone. Thus, it was realized that nuclear weapons AREN'T a military weapon: they cause far to much indiscriminate destruction, and use against an opponent likewise equipped guaranties that the opponent will use them on friendly forces, against which there is NO defense. That is, use of nuclear weapons by friendly forces guaranties that BOTH enemy and friendly forces die in short order. They're suicidal to use for military purposes.
Thus, even the smallest nuclear weapon is a political weapon, and has very little practical military application. Using a nuke is a political (not military) statement, and, as such, belongs in the realm of international relations (and power politics).
Furthermore, the massive increase in destructive power available with the advent of the hydrogen bomb meant that even limited use of them threatened civilization as a whole (though, not, as some doomsayers would have it, the extinction of the human species). Use of a nuclear weapon was justifiably seen as a horrible act, and one which no civilized country could countenance, even against an opponent who could not retaliate in kind. For, if a country chose to use nuclear weapons against a defenseless foe, other nuclear-equipped countries would consider that aggressor to be dangerously unstable, and attack it out of pre-emptive self defense (use of nuclear weapons branded the using country as a rabid dog, and something that would have to be put down immediately, if the global community was to continue to exist).
In short, we have never used nukes after Japan because they simply are too powerful, too uncontrollable, and too indiscriminate in their effects. They're used solely as a weapon of last resort - horded against the possibility that someone less stable will use one, and force the immediate destruction of that foe lest the nuclear genie end civilization.
How did the Little Boy atomic bomb function?
The function of an atomic bomb is to provide enough mass of plutonium or uranium to reach what is called " critical mass," where nuclear reactions going on inside the material can make up for the neutrons leaving the material through its outside surface. The two elements of plutonium or uranium in a bomb are usually separated into parts in order for the critical mass not to be reached until the bomb is ready. Once that point has been reached, any kind of mechanism or chemical explosive will drive all of the separated uranium and plutonium together to reach that "critical mass." It is then that there are sufficient amounts of neutrons bouncing inside to create a chain reaction of fission; collisions between neutrons and the atoms of uranium and plutonium cause the atoms to split into pairs of nuclear fragments releasing energy and more neutrons. The newly released neutrons hit other atoms, continuing many more fission reactions until the "fissile" material is too exhausted or scattered and cannot continue. The intense explosion is a release of enormous amounts of energy in the form of heat and a massive shockwave. The damage occurred is almost unimaginable, with pressure waves, flash burns, high winds, and a deadly radiation in the form of gamma rays and neutrons. Living matter is destroyed, and soil and water are contaminated also.
His major goal was to force Japan to surrender and bring the war to an early end becasue he said "It was a question of saving hundreds of thousands of American lives."
How do you prepare for an atomic bomb attack?
I live in a city of about 60,000. There were five air raid sirens on roofs of large buildings around town when I was a kid, and they used to test them at noon every Tuesday. A very eerie sound. There were yellow and black Civil Defense signs in many public buildings, directing people to the basement in the event of an air raid. Food, water and blankets were supposed to be stored in these air raid shelters too, and medical supplies, including morphine, until the junkies broke in and stole the morphine. We used to have "air raid drills" when I was in elementary school. Sometimes we'd go out in the hallway and sit down on the floor with our backs to the walls, other times we'd all crowd into the "big room", which was a windowless room at the front of the lower level of the building, below ground level on that end. When I was young I worked in the Greyhound Bus Station and found an old yellow and black Civil Defense Geiger Counter in the ravaged remains of what had been the "bomb shelter" in the basement of the Bus Station. New in the box. I took it home, and later donated it to the physics lab at the local university. They did not have a Geiger Counter ("Radiological Dosimeter"). Lots of Americans dug air raid shelters in their backyards in the 50s, and you could go to places like Sears and buy a prefab unit to bury out back.
And not any of this would have been the least little bit of help. All the crowding into public air raid shelters would have just made it easier to find the corpses afterward.
Somewhere in my childhood they stopped testing the air raid sirens every Tuesday. The government had said we were a Class II nuclear target, due to our proximity to other high priority targets, and the fact that most Russian missiles had ten separate warheads - each its own bomb - which had to be dispersed in a radius of less than four hundred miles. Ballistic missiles fly about six thousand miles an hour, so they said we could expect twenty minutes warning, at the most, before the detonations. You would not be able to get anywhere. You cant get out of town in twenty minutes when the roads aren't clogged with people trying to flee for their lives. When I was about twenty, one Saturday morning, as I lay hungover in bed, some fool said "Hey, what's this" and pushed the button that activated the air raid sirens, which had not been tested for several years, and never on a Saturday. I half woke, decided that twenty minutes was not going to do me much good from where i was, and decided to die in bed.
So, how to prepare. Here's what we told one another: put your head between your legs, and kiss your butt goodbye.
What role does Oak Ridge play in the development of the atomic bomb?
The main thing Oak Ridge did was uranium enrichment. But they also built and operated the X-10 reactor a prototype for the plutonium production reactors later built at Hanford.
Did you build the atomic bomb for a good reason?
At the end of World War II, few questioned Truman's decision to drop the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Most Americans accepted the obvious reasoning: the atomic bombings brought the war to a more timely end. They did not have a problem with over one hundred thousand of the enemy being killed. After all, the Japanese attacked America, and not the other way around. In later years, however, many have begun to question the conventional wisdom of "Truman was saving lives," putting forth theories of their own. However, when one examines the issue with great attention to the results of the atomic bombings and compares these results with possible alternatives to using said bombs, the line between truth and fiction begins to clear. Truman's decision to use the atomic bomb on Japan was for the purpose of saving lives and ending the war quickly in order to prevent a disastrous land invasion.
How much did the atomic bomb cost and why did it cost so much?
ALL NEW PROJECTS cost alot of money...to begin the project. After the product is built, then mass production can start; which, by it's very nature (mass production) entails cheaper prices.
----
Depending on the quality, manufacturer, country, it is ALWAYS different. The average price considering paying the works, the mechanics, the materials is just around 3,000,000,000 but can go up near 6,000,000,000.

What cites were destroyed by atomic bombs?
1st Atomic Bomb- (FAT MAN) Hiroshima
2nd Atomic Bomb- (LITTLE BOY) Nagasaki
Actually, the first bomb dropped was Little Boy, and that was on Hiroshima. Fat Man, the second bomb, was dropped on Nagasaki.
The bomb would save American lives.
See: Wikipedia World War II Casualties.
Japan was preparing for a long defense of its homeland.
Was the need to defeat japan the main reason why the atomic bomb was used?
Based upon numerous intelligence sources, the Japanese would not surrender in the event of an Allied invasion. It was calculated that as many as 100,000 Allied troops would die in an invasion of the Japanese islands.
For all practical purposes, Japan was already defeated by the time the U.S. was ready to invade. It was simply a matter of time. Dropping the atomic bombs convinced the Japanese leadership to surrender, saved untold numbers of Allied troops, and hastened the war's end.
What was not a major factor in the decision to use the atomic bomb?
sending a warning to the Soviet Union sending a warning to the soviet union
Whats the name of the bomber that dropped the first atomic bomb on japan?
"Enola Gay." The B29 Superfortress was named after the mother of pilot Colonel Paul. W. Tibbets, Jr.
What size of nuclear bomb made with one ton of uranium?
Its really hard to say, the only nuclear bomb that might contain that much uranium (probably as depleted uranium) would be a hydrogen fusion bomb with a uranium tamper.
Depending on many design features, it would probably weigh a bit under 2 tons and have a yield somewhere between 2 megatons and 20 megatons, most of that produced by fission of the uranium tamper.
NO nuclear bomb could ever contain that much weapons grade uranium, as it would be so far beyond critical that it would simply melt in the factory as it was being assembled and kill anyone nearby with neutron and gamma radiation.
Was Truman a hero or villain for using the atomic bomb?
No, he was President of the United States, but as with many things it depends on perspective. Americans remember Truman with fondness and respect as the man who ended World War II. There are many Japanese families who have a different viewpoint.
What is the code name for the atomic bomb dropped on hiroshima?
It was called the Little boy wich was dropped on August 6 1945.
What might have happened if japan did not ignored the warning about the atomic bombs?
i think that what might have happened if the japan had ignored the atomic bomb warning was that they wouldn't have that much buildingdestroyed would have just let everything how it was before and surrender right when the united states told the Japanese that they were launching the atomic bombs Japanese said i hate you USA(THEY REALLY DINT SAY THAT BUT YOU GET MY POINT) but they never gave up until September 2,1945 japan surrenders and world war 2 was over!!!
