Most likely. Australian Cattle Dogs are born with their ears floppy, but eventually they should stand up. It does not happen with some dogs until they are a few months old. In rare cases, a dog's ears will stay floppy, though this is a flaw in the show ring. (Perfectly fine for a pet!)

Red Heelers are a herding dog. This means that some of their natural behaviors could b deemed undesirable. For example barking, chewing, chasing, digging, defending territory, and nipping heels.

However, with the proper training, they can become a great pet. They are excellent watchdogs and protect the people they love. However, they do need room to run. They will get into mischief without accessible space.

2. If you have the right kind of fence. Privacy,high chain link and concrete or brick are the best. Heelers can dig and if they are very strongly motivated,they are very good at climbing chain link.

3. If you are prepared to break them of nipping (if they are not already trained out of it).

4. If you are prepared to surf website after website,in search of that one piece of information that you need.

5. If you a prepared to try many training techniques and have many fail.

6. If you are ready for a dog that could live to be twenty or more.

7. If you are prepared to teach them that strangers are their friend and cats are not chase toys.

8. If you are ready for an active dog.

Then you are ready to welcome a heeler into your home.

There are many positive things about heelers.

Australian cattle dogs, or blue heelers, can be wonderful with children. However, they will always try to dominate the "pack", and the children must be involved in the training process, so the dog knows its position in the "pack". If allowed to go unchecked, a cattle dog's natural tendency is dominate others with aggression.

From my limited observations, I'm certain that they may be erect as soon as 7-8 weeks especially when the inherited ear is particularly small. Similarly size can have the opposite effect, where-by they often aren't convincingly standing, (flopping about at anything above a stiff gait) until they are easily twice that age. I have owned two that were still not firmed until late, almost having me convinced they never would, but they did.

If you're talking about the Alpine Mastiff or Alpine Dachsbracke then NO. I've never heard of the Alpine shepherd dog. Alpine Mastiffs are Saint Bernards and Alpine Dachsbrackes are hunting dogs.

I have a 4 year old ACD. He's a red heeler. If you want this dog as a pet you need to make sure he has something to do. As far as temperment - he is a love. He loves other dogs, kids and adults. I have that mix and let me say that Timber (his name) is one of the most loving and faithful dogs I have ever had. He is great with my nieces (1 and 4 years old), but because of his Blue Heeler side, he does have his own mind set. He is a very smart, almost deviously smart dog. When we moved to a new home he learned to jump and climb the fence so it was a daily contest between he and my dad as my dad added to the fence to make it harder for him to get out. He held his own until my dad added a rolling post to the top of the fence that kept Timber from getting a footing and getting out.

They have the most expressive eyes and mouth of any dog I have ever seen, you can tell their mood just from the lookos they give you. Such a cute dog. I recommend them to anyone who has the patience to deal with their playful mischevious side. If you can, you'll be rewarded with one of the best friends you ever had.
