Cattle dogs are working dogs who help out on the farm. Australian Cattle Dog, Australian Shepherd, German Shepherd, and Border Collie are some of the most common cattle dogs.

An Australian CattleDog also known as a Heeler, is a dog whos herding behaviour which is instinctual from years of selective breeding for specific behavioral traits.

It is called a "heeler" because it drives cattle by nipping at their heels, and in doing this, the animal's posture places it in a forward crouching position where its hind quarters are higher up in the air than the front quarters are, leaving the tail exposed to the sharp cloven hooves of the cattle, who are capable of kicking straight back and striking the dog in its tailhead ( baser end of the tail closest to the body) causing bodily harm ranging from cuts and lacerations to the tail, to breakage of the tails vertabrae to actual breaking of the dogs spine resulting in paralysis.

It is customary therefore to dock the animals tail, especially in working dogs (heelers, shepherds et al) to prevent injury to the animal.

A cattle dog usually refers to the blue heeler, red heeler and Queensland heeler. It has been specially bred for Australian conditions, for rounding up cattle and helping with mustering. Because it is bred to be a "heeler", it nips at the feet of the cattle to round them up, and so a cattle dog, or blue heeler, that is a family dog often develops the tendency to nip at people's feet to try to round up its "pack". I have one! He has the long, short body of a daschund while being a little bigger. He's about 26 pounds. I'm not sure whether the mother or the father was a heeler or a daschund. He has a heeler face with a daschund nose and pointy ears. The bark is really high and piercing like the heeler. Heelers are also referred to as Australian cattle dogs.

i feel blues are better i have had blues and same with many people in my family and they are nicer in personality and temperament where as the reds have a tendency to be nipper or more aggressive. an uncle had one and he wasn't the nicest and same with a friend of ours she is OK but not a friendly as my blues. but if u treat them right and educate them (by that i mean expose them to the world take them everywhere and show them new things) they should be very nice

A blue heeler is born all white with the exception of it's black markings. Before 6 weeks of age it will have its adult coloring of black/tan and blue and/or red mottling. It's hard to say exactly when it changes color, just like it's hard to say when it's floppy puppy ears will stand straight up as you see in a pure breed adult dog. There are only general time frames for when these both normally happen.
