What changes did Lachlan Macquarie make that improved life in the colony?

He supervised the construction of many buildings and named a lot of the places that was found near Sydney, NSW.

Lachlan Macquarie was Governor of the New South Wales colony in Australia from 1810 to 1821. During this time, he introduced the first building code into the colony, and it was this that largely improved life in the colony. Requirements of this building code included that all buildings must be constructed of timber or brick; they must have a shingle tile roof; and they must have a proper chimney, to minimise fire risk. He also ordered that roads, bridges, wharves, churches and public buildings be constructed.

After Macquarie inspected Hobart Town in Van Diemen's Land, now Tasmania, he ordered a proper survey of a regular street layout, and this layout still forms the current centre of the city of Hobart.

Macquarie also founded the first bank in Australia in April 1817: this was the Bank of New South Wales. The bank was preceded by a Commissary - a quasi-military officicer appointed by the Treasury - but it was the first bank to carry out functions easily accessible by the people of Sydney.

Macquarie promoted exploration in order to facilitate the spread of settlement. In 1813 he sponsored Blaxland, Wentworth and Lawson on their journey across the Blue Mountains, where they found the grazing plains of the interior. Following their discovery, Macquarie ordered the establishment of Bathurst, Australia's first inland city. He appointed John Oxley as surveyor-general and sent him on expeditions up the coast of New South Wales and inland to find new rivers and new lands for settlement. This improved life, because it enabled land owners to move further out, and generated both income and produce for the colony.

Name the capital city founded by John Batman in 1835?

Melbourne is the capital city of Victoria, Australia, founded by John Batman in 1835.

The city came about as a result of the need for more land. Native born Australian John Batman wanted to open up new pastureland and applied for land in the Westernport Bay area (now Victoria), but was not granted any. In May 1835, he led a syndicate calling themselves the 'Port Phillip Association' to explore Port Phillip Bay, looking for possible sites to begin a new settlement. On 6 June 1835, Batman signed a 'treaty' with the Aborigines, giving him free access to almost 250,000 hectares of land.

Governor Bourke said Batman's treaties were invalid, and warned him against trespassing on crown land. Despite this, the settlement remained.

The new township was surveyed and named as Melbourne on 3 March 1837, in honour of the British Prime Minister, Lord Melbourne.

Who are bushrangers?

Bushranger was the Australian term coined for those who were initially absconded convicts who 'ranged in the bush' (comparatively few convicts were held in prison - the colony was generally an 'open prison' with periodic muster roll calls, most convicts moving around freely in their allotted jobs, so taking french leave was simple). The name originated in the early 1800s and these 'bush rangers' gained sustenance from preying on isloated shepherds' huts and farmhouses. Later bushrangers were not necessarily escaped convicts or even already criminal. Some were merely men whose families had fallen on hard times and needed money, and bushranging was an easy way to get it. These bushrangers moved into cattle duffing, highway robbery and banks, especially once the goldrushes started. Remote bush tracks and coach routes provided ideal opportunities to ambush solo travellers and the coaches which not only transported well-to-do landowners and traders, but also gold from the diggings. What is the importance of Australia Day?

Australia Day, celebrated annually on January 26, commemorates the landing of the First Fleet at Port Jackson, and the raising of the Union Jack to claim the land as belonging to England.

It has nothing to do with Captain Cook landing on Australian shores in 1770. It is more to do with the proclamation of British sovereignty, under King George III of Great Britain, over the eastern Australian seaboard, which Captain James Cook had explored in 1770.

The First Fleet of convicts left Portsmouth, England, on 13 May 1787,and arrived in Botany Bay on 18 January 1788. Phillip immediately determined that there was insufficient fresh water, an absence of usable timber, poor quality soil and no safe harbour at Botany Bay. Thus the fleet was moved to Port Jackson, arriving on 26 January 1788.

Australia Day has become a day to celebrate our national identity, and what it is to be "Australian". This is also the day when many immigrants who have undergone citizenship education become naturalised Australians in citizenship ceremonies.
