Was slav nationalism to blame for the fall of Austria-Hungary?

Austria-Hungary was more or less the achievement of a familly (The Hapsburgs) rather than of a conquering nation. They have brought togather a huge land in which many different nations lived (Hungarians, Czechs, Germans, Slovenes...) at a time when nationality seemed irrelevant. The peoples of the Empire lived seperatly in rather autonomous kingdoms, duchies etc.

The tensions began when the absolute emperors sought to relinquish the autonomies of the provinces in favour of a centralized government which started to promote the German language by which threatening the other nations of the empire which formed an overwhelming majority.

With the spread of German nationalism other concurring nationalisms began to take hold. As opposition to Germanisation grew strongerthe Germans decided to share power with the second largest nation, the Hungarians.

Then both sides, the Austrian and the Hungarian in their respective parts, tried to build a unitary state through assimilating the other nations they had ruled over out of that multinational feud of the Hapsburgs. This was met with fierce resistance from all the other communities most notably the Czechs and South Slavs who demanded equal rights for their languages and autonomy within their historic territories. This brought few results.

And when the government in Vienna forced the country into a futile war nobody but the Germans would have benefited from, those oppressed nations and their leaders decided to leave the empire for good and follow the path to independence.

Did Austria and Hungary share the same monarch?

Yes, Austria and Hungary shared the same monarch from 1867 until the end of World War I in 1918. This arrangement was part of the Austro-Hungarian Compromise, which established a dual monarchy, allowing both regions to maintain separate governments while being united under a single emperor. Franz Joseph I was one of the most notable monarchs during this period. Despite their shared monarchy, Austria and Hungary had distinct political and administrative systems.

Who wanted to break away from Austria Hungary's empire?

What country refused to honor its alliance with Germany and Austria-Hungary?

Italy was allied with Germany and Austria-Hungary when World War I started. Italy said that since Austria-Hungary started the war by declaring war on Serbia, and the alliance was a defensive pact (ie if one country is attacked, the others would help), they were under no obligation to join the war.

At that point in history, Italians had a long-standing dislike of Austria. Austria had once ruled most of northern Italy, and resisted efforts for Italy to unify (until the mid-1800's, Italy was broken up into many smaller countries); when World War I started, Austria still ruled some Italian cities ("Italia Irridentia", or "unredeemed Italy"). They even fought a war against each other in the 1860's while Austria was fighting Prussia. So it's not surprising that Italy didn't have much desire to help Austria fight her war against Serbia.

What rule did the alliance system play in preventing Austria-Hungary and Serbia from coming to a compromise settlement?

Had there not been alliances, no one would have stepped in to defend Serbia and negotiations would have continued. But, Russia stepped in and prevented that. It also made the mistake of provoking Germany, who would have stayed out of the conflict, and joining Austria.

If Austria-Hungary attacks Serbia who will defend it?

Serbia will be defended by Russia. If Russia mobilises, this brings the German warplan into play, and they must mobilise too. Since the German plan assumes beating France before fighting Russia, the assumption of Russian mobilisation brings France into the war; and since France and Great Britain are linked by an Entente this makes the conflict a global World War.

Which alliance consisted of Germany Austria Hungary and the ottoman empire in 1914?

The Triple Alliance (1882) included all three countries. Italy, regarding their "common defense" pact not to apply due to Austrian aggression, did not join Germany and Austria-Hungary in World War I (1914), and actually fought against Austria later in the war.
