NASCAR is an acronym for National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing. A mechanic from Atlanta named Red Vogt came up with the acronym and the name. Red Vogt was the mechanic for Red Byron, NASCAR's first champion. He owned a garage on Hemphill avenue in Atlanta where moonshiners running shine from Dawsonville, GA, into Atlanta could get their cars "souped up" to outrun law enforcement. The owner of Red Byron's car was Raymond Parks, a known moonshiner who still owns a liquor store on Northside Drive in Atlanta. Parks, Byron and Vogt were NASCAR's first team. These men all met with Bill France in Daytona at a hotel on the beach. They all came together to form the organization that became known as NASCAR.

What is the Gold and Glory Classic Motor Race?
The Indianapolis Motor Speedway in the 1920s, like most businesses in Indiana during the time, was rigidly segregated. Though there were no "official" rules outlining segregation at the track overt prejudices sent a powerful signal to talented African-American mechanics and drivers. In the summer of 1924, with the Ku Klux Klan in the midst of its climb to power, a group of African-American business leaders and sports promoters gathered in a small office above a local jazz club on Indiana Avenue in Indianapolis. There they planned an extravagant black autoracing event that would parallel the grandeur and pageantry of the Indy 500. Led by charismatic contractor William Rucker, the group dubbed themselves the Colored Speedway Association. They devised plans for a "Negro Racing Circuit" that spanned the Midwest, from Chicago to Cleveland, from Pittsburgh to Des Moines. The "crown jewel" of the circuit was a 100-mile event held on the dirt track at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. Twenty-five of the nation's top African-American drivers and mechanics competed for more than $2,500 in cash, one of the largest purses in auto racing during the era. A sportswriter from the Chicago Defender wrote of the initial race on August 2, 1924, "Chocolate jockeys will spur their gas-snorting, rubber-shod speedway monsters to death-defying speeds in hopes of winning gold for themselves and glory for their race." The race was dubbed "the Gold & Glory Sweepstakes." * http://www.allbusiness.com/north-america/united-states-indiana/553878-1.html

When did this pushing-pulling racing style start in Nascar?
2011 is the first year Daytona has seen what is a new style of lock-bumper superdraft racing. The lock-bumper superdraft, where two cars are literally locked together all the way around the track, debuted at Talladega in April 2009 but in previous races the two-car superdraft would take the lead, then the second car would pass the leader upon the tandem clearing traffic. What happened at Daytona is in the superdraft the pushing car refused to pass the leader, instead staying on his bumper running interference for the leader, who was usually a teammate of the pushing car. When four or more such tandems were created, they created an aeropush effect on cars behind them - air is now reassembling behind each tandem as a wall instead of the normal drafting vacuum; the result was that cars outside the top ten were being stopped from catching up to the leading groups.
NASCAR attempted to break the 2-car superdrafts by narrowing the front grilles of cars to make them overheat without pulling out to pass; it didn't work as trailing cars instead simply moved briefly to one side to take in fresh air, plus drivers began radioing each other to coordinate prearranged "swaps" instead of fighting each other for position.
What does start and park mean in NASCAR?
Start and Park refers to cars who qualify for races and then, after a few laps, pull off the track and quit the race. The purpose is to collect prize money for whichever place they come in (usually last or close to last) and at the same time the teams do not have to spend money on tire, body damage or other mechanical issues. Apparently teams use the money to finance other race teams they own or to spend on races they feel they have a better chance with.
NASCAR tires vary in compounds, soft, or hardness, by the track they are to be used on, and what for. They used to make a super soft tire, called "gumballs" just for qualifying. Super sticky, but wear out fast. You got better traction for faster qualifying times, but only for a few laps. Ultimately you don't want to make the tire any harder than you have to. The softer, the more grip. But, then, heat comes into play, and tire pressure, sping rate.........Then, if you run some laps, get a caution, then race again with changing them, they react totally randomly because they have been heated, and cooled, which makes them harder. Funny thing, tires. Hard to explain. Softer=better grip. Too soft=heat=slip. Hard=lots of slip=too low tire pressure to compensate=unsafe tire. That's about the best I can do.
