Battle of Chancellorsville

After having successfully crossed the Rappahannock and Rapidan and near to have carried out the concentration of 75,000 men at Chancellorsville, Joseph Hooker addressed to the Army a message. After congratulating ranks and files on having brilliantly carried out the manoeuvre, claimed: " Our enemy has ingloriously to flee or come out of his entrenchments and give us battle on our soil, where a certain destruction awaits him "

Stonewall Jackson was wounded by friendly fire at the US Civil War Battle of Chancellorsville in April and early May of 1863. Jackson was shot on May 2, in his left arm which had to be amputated. He died of his wounds on May 10, 1863.

The people killed or wounded in battle are called casualties.

It was Lee's most brilliant display of tactical genius, completely wrong-footing the otherwise-successful Union commander Hooker.

But it cost him his loyal subordinate Stonewall Jackson, fatally wounded in this battle, and some say this would cost him victory at the forthcoming Gettysburg conflict.

Most of the fighting took place on the hills over looking the city, called Marye's Heights. Several Union assaults were repulsed with great loss of life. Burnside's defeated Union army retired from the field.

The south could have won early on. In 1861 the British east India trading company offered (among other things including bullets and money) the confederate states 10 iron ships. These iron ships were ocean going and (along with other wooden ships) could have broken the union blockade and even raided the north. The now well supplied confederate army could have raised more soldiers and they would have been better supplied. The people of the confederate states would also have food and other normal day supplies. If this offer had been excepted which Pres. Davis did not, It very likely would have led to a confederate invasion of the north after a victory in Virginia. The northern people would have very likely called for peace if there major cities that were in reach (including dc and Philadelphia) were taken.

The south was making moves to abolish slavery, over a period of time often thought to be 20 years. Total abolition probably coming around 1880. The south would have very likely become allies with great Britain and France while the us would side with Germany (or early on Prussia). The confederacy may have also considered southern expansion into central America and even south America.

John Laurens was an American solider during the Revolution. He was injured in the Battle of Germantown by a shooting.

Although the battlefield was roughly the same, the Battle of Wilderness Tavern or The Wilderness was fought one year later than that of Chancellorsville, from

May 3rd to May 6th, 1864.

The future cannot affect the past.

It was his victories through the summer of 1862, culminating in 2nd Bull Run, that gave him the confidence to invade the North, to try to bring Maryland into the Confederacy. This invasion was stalled at Antietam, which was a Union victory, not Confederate.

The following summer, his victory at Chancellorsville gave him the confidence to try again, this time to plunder the rich farming state of Pennsylvania, to forage for his starving troops. That invasion was stopped by the Union win at Gettysburg.

The Confederates were confident in their leaders, the Union soldiers less so. After the battle, the Union troops said they had been misused by Hooker.

Lee's outnumbered army won because of Lee's audacity. He split his army into three parts, one part of 10,000 sent to watch Sedgewick's 47,000 men at Fredericksburgh, and Jackson's 28,000 flanking of Hooker's main force, while Lee stood firm with 14,000 to watch Hooker. Jackson rolled up Hooker's right and won the battle. Lee also was missing Longstreet's corps, on duty elsewhere.

Lee divided his army into three parts to attack Hooker's army. He sent Jubal Early with 10,000 troops to watch General Sedgewick's corps at Fredricksburgh, then sent Jackson on a 12 mile march to hit Howard's Corps, who was the right of Hooker's line. Jackson's troops burst out of the woods and rolled the Federal lines up. Lee attacked the center, and Early held Sedgewick for a while, until Hooker was driven north.

General Jackson's Corps took a route of 12 miles and fell on General O.Howards Corps, catching them by surprise, and routing the Federal Army.

133,868 soldiers of the Army of the Potomac fought 60,892 of the Army of Northern Virginia.
