Which skills were taught at the Mission of the Alamo?

The Mission at the present day Alamo in Texas was a religious mission. So many of the skills that were taught by the missionaries related to religion, livelihood, and literacy. The children and parents would have been taught basic reading, recitation and writing skills. They also would have been taught basic cleaning, food growing, and food preparation skills. They would have been encouraged in the gainful skills that they already had.

The mission was operated as such for almost seventy years, 1724-1793. During that time, it was called La Mision San Antonio de Valero. With its disbanding, land was given to those whom the missionaries had taught.

In the early 19th century, the area attracted a steady military presence. Cavalry soldiers were stationed there. The area came to be known as Alamo, for two reasons. One was the presence of the cottonwood tree, which was 'alamo' in Spanish. The other was the origins of many of the soldiers in Alamo de Parras in Coahuila, Mexico.

What was the relationship between Mexicans and Texans before and during the Battle of the Alamo. For example did the Texans think higher of themselves over Mexicans etc?

First of all, I would like to get across that I am not a racist.

The relationship between the Mexicans and the Texans (America was also involved) was not good at all. Mexicans hated Texans and vice versa. The main dispute though was not racism, but over land. Mexico and America both claimed Texas as their own state. Oviously America won. I myself believe this may be how we grew such a hating bond between mainly white Americans and Mexicans. Now this is another issue, but ever since that war, the American, Mexican border has been guarded. On the Northern side, Canada's border with the US is the largest border unprotected! Now you can see the relationship between the two.

Will you name the African-Americans at the Battle of the Alamo?

There was the cook named Bettie, while Charlie, Joe and Sam are named and were all slaves. These mentioned individuals all survived because they were assumed like the women and children to have all been non combatants. Travis' slave Joe did participate in the fighting and insisted that there were other blacks present among the Texian soldiers who were free men, but Texas History makes no mention of this fact. (Southern historians, and historians in general, made a serious effort to downplay any favorable mention of Blacks and people of mixed races.) The number of Mexican Texians is also rarely mentioned but they were numerous and probably accounted for no less than 20 percent of the combatant's.
