Franklin signed

As to "why" you would need to read his autobiography. In short, he was a great man who was well respected by his community. Whenever Pennsylvania or the colonies/nation needed a representative Franklin was on the "short list." He had a reputation for being diplomatic, smart, fair and friendly.

The above is wrong. Roger Sherman was the only founding father to sign all four great state papers of the U.S. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roger_Sherman

Why did Benjamin Franklin discovery electricity?

I think he was a bit shocked.

Actually, Ole Ben never discovered electricity. We knew about the energy for years before he played around with that kite. What he did discover is that lightening is made from it. That is an important discovery in itself. This allowed him to create the lightening rod, which saved many a barn.. and home.

The discovery of electric current goes back to Faraday, Tesla and others like these true geniuses. Ben was a piker compared ot the likes of these two!

But Ben's research intrigued him. He wrote a letter in which he said "For my own part, I never was before engaged in any study that so engrossed my attention and my time as this has lately done." He is credited for being the first to identify the concept of flow and plus and minus in electricity. His collections of letters to his friend Collinson in England were collected into a pamphlet which got Ben great fame in Europe as well as getting him elected to the Royal Society.
