As if a career as a printer, man of letters, political type, and inventor were not enough. Hospitals may have been named in his honor, but Franklin was not in any sense a medical practitioner. Benjamin Rush, a contemporary, was and he was also a pre-freudian psychiatrist- No he did not found the Political asylum! sorry about the jokes but Old Ben did not establish hospitals. No. In fact, everything I have read points to the opposite. He was a man who liked his wine, his women, his food with "gusto". He was a member of London's Hell Fire club which was not known for its bridge games. He had two estates in Europe with one in London and one in Paris. He lived "large". This is not a man who would live as a vegetarian and was the rock star of his time.

If Franklin did indeed fly a kite into a thuderstorm as folklore states, the charge of electricity down the wet twine would not have been enough to seriously shock him. There was a risk of lightning being directed to him, but this would likely have burned up the kite and twine rather than Franklin.

Benjamin was pulled from school to support the family. He worked for his dad making candles for a while and then was apprenticed to his brother who was a printer. He was often treated badly until he basically escaped. He educated himself and is the epitome of the self-made man.

The lightning Rod was not dicovered, it was invented. The way to use the lightning rod was discovered however. Ive done a lot of looking up on this subject but never found the name of the person responsible for inventing the lightning Rod.
