What prime minister was responsible for making Canada a bilingual country?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

There is no law requiring the prime minister to speak French. For that matter, there is no law requiring the prime minister to speak English either. But for more than a generation, the prime minister from time to time has been able to speak both official languages. The last prime minister to be unilingual English speaking was John George Diefenbaker (1957-1963). (That's Dief, as in chief, followed by en, and then baker.) Diefenbaker used to joke that when he spoke French, every English speaking Canadian knew exactly what he was saying. His pronunciation of the French that was written for him was absolutely dreadful. As a practical political reality, it is now unlikely that anyone would become prime minister who was not bilingual.

When did Sir Robert Borden become the Prime Minister of Canada?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Whether any given Prime Minsiter was "good" is entirely subjective. He was the Prime Minister of Canada throughout WWI, and managed to largely unite the fractured Canadian political scene in his Unionist party. He is credited with contributing to developing the equality of the nations within the British Empire (which became the Commonwealth of Nations). Borden is particularly known for his involvement in the Conscription Crisis of 1917. His face is featured on the Canadian $100 bill.

Who was the Prime Minister of Canada in 2010?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Yes, the Prime Minister can be reelected as an MP any number of times, even if they are no longer prime minister following their reelection.

If you mean 'reelected as Prime Minister', the Prime Minister is not directly elected to begin with.

However, the term of a Prime Minister is indefinite, and a Prime Minister can be reappointed by the Governor General any number of times. The only limitation on a Prime Minister's term is that he/she must maintain the confidence of the House of Commons, and can be forced to resign through political pressure (or be dismissed by the Governor General, though this is rare) at any time.
