Care of Birds

Cage birds have been valued for thousands of years. In the past three or four centuries, birds have been bred extensively in captivity. Keeping a pet bird is very different than keeping a pet mammal. They are not just a feathered kitten or puppy. Avian companions require special care and this is the category to find out all about that.

How do you know if your budgie has broken its legs?

put flour on the bleeding spot!!:)

Flour might work, but many bird books recommend keeping a coagulating agent on hand. Birds can get a "blood feather" which is a malformed feather that doesn't mature. The blood vessel stays open. Blood feathers have to be pulled, then you use a clotting agent if necessary. Google "blood feather" for more complete information.

Do parakeets got to have a different cage for mating?

No, you just need to buy or make a nesting box for them. A nesting box is some sort of covered box with enough space for the birds to move around in, it connects to the cage through a hole near the top, but it has to be big enough that the birds can get in. Also, to be able to check in once and a while without disturbing the occupant too much, make sure that the top can open up so that you can see in.

The one thing that is absolutely necessary though is nesting material (like strips of shredded paper).

Do you have to clip a budgie's wings if they just can fly in a enclosed room?

It's not necessary but sometimes if you have a window in your room the bird will see it and believe it can fly though it, which it tries and will smash into it, usually the end to that is a dead bird with a broken neck. So It's a good idea to do so.

Does a female or male parakeet sing?

As a matter of fact, they do! It all depends on how the female was raised and how much noise/songs/tunes were around her as she grew up. I had bought a boy cockatiel who never sang; just sqeeked a lot. I proceeded to buy a female and at 6 a.m. every morning she'd sing the same tune for about 5 minutes. Pretty soon the male learned the song. I figured that the girl would soon learn a noise or song before the male, so I taught her how to whistle like someone sexy was walking by, the howl of a wolf and the star wars theme song. You can teach them to sing, it just takes time and patience, or maybe you'll get lucky like I did and already have a vocal female.

What is a nest box?

A nestbox (either homemade or bought) is a wooden box with a circular hole just big enough to admit small birds, or may be open fronted for larger birds such as owls, etc. The nestbox can be fixed high in a tree or on the side of a house. The aim is to give a nesting box that a mated pair of birds can lay and raise their young.

How do you tell if your common gray cockatiel is a boy or girl?

The only way to tell if your CAG is male or female is to do a DNA blood test. Take your CAG to your avian vet and they will clip its nail just far enough to get a drop of blood. They send it off and you'll get your results in about a week! I DNA tested my CAG and it cost around $20.

How big must a zebra finch aviary be?

How do you make a Sun Conure Quiet?

Firstly, let me differentiate between constant ear-piercing, nerve-racking, blatant screaming (that needs to be tackled) and a parrot's "call to the flock" (which you should not attempt to stop) It is important to understand that most parrots "call to the flock" several times per day, usually in the morning, around noon, at dusk, which is a completely natural behavior since birds are social animals. You cannot, and SHOULD NOT, attempt to stop this natural process. This flock calling is a parrot's way of determining which flock members are present or not present and it's just checking up on you because YOU are part of the parrot's flock! Now, onto the annoying, ear-piercing screaming that drives you crazy… Before attempting to resolve any screaming problem, you must ensure there's NO medical reason involved by seeking medical evaluation. Now, there are LOTS of different reasons why birds may scream - just like a human child. If you hear your kid screaming upstairs, you can't just pinpoint exactly what's wrong with the child, right? You have to investigate… In this article, I'm going to tackle a couple of them... Something to consider is whether YOU have taught the bird to scream. Clapping your hands loudly in order to hush her up is not the way to do it in case you where wondering! What you're actually doing is encouraging this screaming behavior… You see, when a parrot screams and the owner reacts by screaming back at the bird, the bird learns that screaming is an ACCEPTABLE form of communication. The bird owners react by screaming back, throwing items at the bird, dousing the bird with water, etc. This human reaction is negative, but reaction none the less, which is exactly what the parrot wanted to begin with! As a result, some parrots become confused and don't know how to behave, but since they've learned to scream, this is how they react! You need to understand that some parrots scream as a way to get ATTENTION! By the way… don't use water as a punishment… And then you wonder why the parrot doesn't want to take a bath. Basically, if there is a lot of screaming or noise in the home, a parrot may feel it is acceptable for it to scream in order to be heard or that screaming is a natural part of life. Interesting little creatures, aren't they? A VICIOUS CYCLE IS CREATED The cycle must be broken in order to change the negative behavior. Reward your bird when s/he doesn't scream and never reward your bird when it does. A reward can be as simple as a look from you. You must… COMPLETELY IGNORE THE SCREAMING BEHAVIOR! Go outside, use ear plugs, lock yourself in a room or go out of ear range if you must, but do NOT reward screaming behavior by showing your bird any reaction to it. The screeming will stop once the bird has realized it's not getting anywhere with the noise. However, shower your bird with attention and love once the screaming stops: if your standing outside the door for 10 minutes before you hear even a 10 second pause, go in a give your bird a treat. Avoid taking your bird out after s/he is quitet until the sinece comes without the screeming. you leave the room, wait only like, 5 seconds. If you hear nothing, go in and give your bird a treat, tell them they are good. Maybe get them to step up out of the cage (Attention is really all they want) do maybe a trick or two after the silence has gone on for more then 30 second, and tell them they are good.you should get to a stage where you can leave, make a cup of tea, come back, and have a happy quiet bird waiting for your arrival SILENTLY! Try the techniques I've shared and let me know how you get on with your parrot.

Will a budgie die without a companion?

I really don't know for real but I've had this budgie for 6 month and I was working at home during that time, later on I've got a full time job and had to leave her unattended during the day. Finally she got sick and after couple of days it got worse and worst and last night I watched her dying in the cage, poor thing, it really made me sad . But generally it is like humans, what happens if they are left alone ! They get sick, well won't die for sure perhaps , but don't leave your bird alone, it makes it vulnerable to diseases.

Will a mother bird take its baby back after you touch it?

no! If it is a nestling,(no feathers and fuzzy) place it back in its nest, If it is a fledgling, (baby with full feathers) leave it alone and keep your cat inside. Birds have limited smell and can not detect human scent. They rely on visual cues to detect danger. That the mother will kill or abandon the baby is a proven wives tale.

How do you care for nesting budgie?

Budgies are simple to take care of but read these hints and instructions very carefully:

1. Give your budgie a safe and large enough cage.

2. Give your budgie plenty of fun toys. Replace the toys regularly so your budgie doesn't get bored. Leave your budgie's favorite toy inside.

3. Give your budgie check-ups at the vet at least once a month.

4. Feel your budgie's breastbone (or wishbone) everyday to make sure your budgie isn't fat. You cannot feel the breastbone if your budgie is fat.

5. Give your budgie high-quality food.

6. Replace your budgie's water EVERYDAY!

7. Clean your budgie's cage every week.

8. Have your budgie stay outside the cage WITH YOUR SUPERVISION!

9. Feel your budgie's food (or look) for seeds that have not been eaten or it will starve.

10. Enjoy the budgie!

How do you tell if a budgie is happy?

It's not.

Would you be happy if you were confined to a single room of your house for your entire life?

The best rabbit habitat involves one in which either rabbits are given hours of supervised free roam time outside of the cage or are able to roam free in a bunny proofed area that is connected to their cage.

Yeah, but you're not a bunny and they have different personalities so this question is still unanswered. :)

I'm not a bunny but I speak rabbit (and English, I've fixed your mistakes above). And if the question being answered is dependent on the rabbit's personality we would need to know the personality wouldn't we? And since knowing the rabbit's personality is dependent on speaking rabbit I'm pretty sure I've answered this question. However, I'm sure some nitwit will come in and say how happy their rabbit is being confined all of it's poor life just so the person asking this question can feel good about the choice they've made to cage their active and intelligent pet rabbit.

~Hey, stop being all sarcastic with each other. Even if you could speak rabbit... did you talk to this persons specific bunny? I don't think you did. So, I believe the asker is looking for signs that the bunny is content. Personally, my bunny, Blaze, loves his cage. I have the door open pretty much anytime I'm home so he can run around and after he gets his exercise, he goes straight to his cage to chill. He prefers staying in there over sitting in the living room or on my bed and he seems to choose his cage just as often as a few of his other favorite spots in my room despite being in his cage for hours when I'm sleeping or not home. The decisions that he makes like that, let me know that he is happy with his cage.

A bunny must be let out of his cage as often as possible though because although I love hanging out in my room, of course I want and need to get out of it a fair amount of time and a bunny is no different. Also, if the bunny has space to jump, stretch out, eat, and poop, then he shouldn't mind chillin' in his cage when he has to. If he looks relaxed and lays on his side or back, that is a sign he's contented. :) Peace.
