I recommend only buying a turtle from a breeder. Most places have reptile expos. Look for one in your area. Or go online and join some forums where you can find reputable breeders...joining your local turtle and tortoise club may also help.

Turtles like to be left alone. They will get skiddish if you keep reaching into the tank to grab it. Just let it be. They like to relax under the basking light and go in for several dives throughout the day and of course, looks forward to the part of the day when you feed it! Remember, do not feed it more than once a day and the total amount of food fed to the turtle should be about the size of its head. Do not overfeed it. Obesity is common among turtles due to handler's inexperience with caring for turtles. Good luck!

Yes! All pets need attention! I take my turtle outside and put it in the pool of water I made for her. She loves it! If I take her out and put her on the grass, she crawls back in! I dug a hole in my backyard, lined it with rocks, filled it up, put her in it, and kept the hose on in a gentle stream. You could also use a kiddie pool. I put her in a tank and take her in the living room with me, just for a change of scenery. You could also flip her over (gently and for just a second) and scratch her belly. Try different foods and give her treats when you play. Turtles are very intelligent, and need to play, or they get bored and might eventually die.

Any turtle that has really long claws is most likely a male. That includes Eastern Painted Turtles. Other traits of the Eastern Painted Turtle are 2 yellow spots behind each eye and white stripes running down the throat. Red or orange stripes running down the legs and tail. From what I have read on other websites you should NOT feed terrapins spinach. Romani and red lettuce, small amounts of green lettuce (not iceberg), carrot tops, kale, apple and tomato can be given among other things. And don't forget your terrapins will also need meat such as whitebait, shrimp, snails or crickets especially when they are young.

Yes, in fact this would be a better cohabitation than many as they would rarely, if ever, be competing for the same food and will likely be tolerant, if indifferent, to each other's company.

Do plenty of research on mutually suitable substrates and terrain (avoid too many items that would inhibit the tortoise's movement...low rocks might be good) and give them plenty of personal space, hopefully in a 20 gallon or larger tank. Obviously length and width of tank is more important here than height. Also, I would recommend loose "woodland soil" as the substrate so they might each dig and bury at will.

Also, note that the snake will probably be oblivious to the tortoise's food and will likely knock it into the substrate as it moves around, so look for that periodically to avoid rotting vegetation.
