Considering that rats have metacognition, and they also learn similar to the way humans do - and as cats are not smarter than humans - it would show that rats quite possibly are more intelligent than cats. This answer and opinion is also based on the fact that Pigs are as smart as a 3 year old, and they say rats are quite close behind pigs with intelligence.

After owning many cats and rats in my 31 years, and watching them play and learn, rats are definitely smarter. Cats are smart only with things that are within their instinctive nature, or that have become a habit to them through long repetition, whereas rats learn many things that are outside the normal for an animal to learn. If you owned one, you would be quite surprised as to what you can teach them, and teach them very quickly too.

I don't think declawing is right at all. If your having a scratching problem get her cat toys she can scratch on like mats or a climbing tower. If she scratches on things she shouldn't squirt her with some water from a spray bottle. I feel that declawing is inhumane. If that's what you resort to your to lazy to do the right thing for the animal. In fact, declawing is considered so inhumane that at least 25 countries have banned this procedure.

Physical ailments such as premature arthritis, cystitis, or perennial skin disorders can occur. Bungled surgeries can result in growth of deformed claws or serious infection.

So Please do NOT declaw your cat. There are so many better ways of dealing with the scratching: Train the cat or kitten to use a scratching post. Many cats will take to scratching posts naturally. Make it a regular habit of clipping the cat's claws using a pet nail clipper. The other alternative is to purchase something called "soft paws". These are little plastic "gloves" that fit onto each claw to stop it from scratching furniture.

Popular wisdom seems to be that you just move the litter tray nearer the door and eventually outside and into a flower bed. Then you can remove it altogether. If the cat is small you can go out with them and scratch around in the dirt with your fingers, or pick up their paw and use it to scratch the dirt. Instincts kick in and they know what this means. It worked for all of our kittens. Just be careful while doing that though, because some kittens HATE IT when you get a hold of their paw and simulate pawing... They just IGNORE the act all together sometimes if you do things that they didn't intend to do.

Cat's meow because unlike us, they cannot speak. Kitty is trying to tell you something. Does kitty have a bowl of dry kibble and fresh water available to her at all times? If kitty is constantly hungry, she will wake you asking for food. If not, please get one. And fresh batteries in your smoke alarms every 6 months. But more likely than not, kitty wants food or water, or both. And a clean litter box, please. If she is well fed, then encourage her to come into bed w/ you and cuddle back to sleep. After all, that's just one of the things that cats do best! :D

well if a cat is happy all day it will purr a lot but it depends

That is normal. Most cats run and hide when strangers enter their home. Cats are notoriously averse to change of any kind. Anything new or strange frightens them. This is why you can't take a cat for walks on a leash. It's not fun for them like it is for dogs. All the strange sights and smells terrify them. Cats like peace and quiet and consistency.

Unlike dogs, cats also are not social animals. They're not completely solitary (most get depressed if they are left alone all day), but they are not eager to meet new people like dogs are.

To cats, a strange person is a wild card. They don't know if you could be a threat or not. So they run and hide until they've had some time to assess the situation. They wait and they listen, and after awhile, if everything seems peaceful enough, they'll come out and investigate.

The investigation goes like this: they go into the room where you are, and sit and watch you awhile from a safe distance. If you seem harmless (if you are quiet and non-aggressive and don't make too many sudden movements) they'll go up and sniff you and let you pet them. If you stay there long enough, the cat will probably end up on your lap.

If you are loud and aggressive and make a lot of sudden movements, then they will decide you're not safe and will usually retreat again. This is why people who don't like cats are always complaining that cats won't leave them alone. That is precisely the reason cats like them: because they leave them alone.
