Cat Maintenance

Cat maintenance focuses on the hair and claws of the cat. Combing a cat’s fur is an excellent way of getting rid of hair balls and checking for fleas. One should provide a scratching post to keep the cat's nails trimmed.

What can you give a cat for pain?

Cats are extremely susceptible to medications. Consult your vet about your concerns and they will be able to provide you with information on how to alleviate the pain. Depending on what is causing the pain the cat may be given antibiotics, pain meds or other palliatives. Keep your cat warm and in a comfortable, soft bed.

Why is your cat pooping and peeing randomly on the floor?

Sometimes, it can be a sign of health problems. If your cat is healthy, it's probably more of a behavioral problem. Can you think of anything she might be upset about like a change in litter? Some cats are finicky about things like that and will show that they're not happy by pooping outside their box.

How do you feed a cat that are scared of you food?

Pour some cat food in a bowl and go inside. Give it a few minutes and peek out a window to see if it's eating it. I can almost guarantee it will be eating it!Trust me. I've done this before

Leave the food somewhere near where you have seen it or where it was, and most likely the cat will find it. Good luck. :)

What do you feed stray cats on the street?

Give them water to drink and/or some cat food or plain (unseasoned) meat such as chicken. Do not give them processed meats as they contain preservatives and salt which can harm a cat if it eats too much.

Can you trim a kitten cat's claws?

I completely believe that kittens' nails shouldn't be cut because, when they need it, they pull off old layers when needed. When I'm walking round the house I often find claws on the floor, discarded. This is natural because, when they scratch at things, they are sharpening their claws, and when his claws have been sanded down a lot, they become too small. At this stage, it is easy and painless for him to pull them off. You should not cut the claws off the poor kitten, because you don't know if they are ready yet.

Another Answer

it depends I personally don't believe in taking out a cats nails but I think it is ok to have them cut every once in a while when they get really sharp (a cat's nails can never get too long). Like the person above me said cats do shed a layer of their nails to make them sharp but I have never heard of the cat being able to pull off the actual nail. I would just call a veterinarian clinic (its free, just ask a couple questions) and ask about it and what age is the best to get them trimmed, etc. Again I strongly suggest you don't get your cats nails taken out (just trimmed) because they can become insecure, mean etc. actually getting the nails surgically removed is equivalent to having a humans fingers cut off.

Another Answer

I would trim a cat's nails when they have become too sharp. If you do this to a cat they have no weapons if they ever get in a fight.

How old can cats live up to in human years?

Answer

I had a cat that was 20 years old. She had been a barn kitten and the runt of the litter and quite sick when the person gave her to me. I took great care of her and cuddled her constantly. At first she just rejected being cuddled, but with gentle and persistent tries several times a day for a couple of weeks she loved being held. Animals are incredible creatures and dogs/cats with much love, good food and vet care as well as play time for the cats or walking your dog every day can live a very long time. I also had 2 dogs that lived to be almost 20 in human years. Like people it also depends on the gene pool the pet came from. I still say love conquers all, because cats and dogs (pigs, horses, etc. are included in this as well) are extremely loyal and loving to their owners if treated well and can live to be a ripe old age.

I always have to have a giggle within myself when I can have the odd rough day and I look at the loyal devotion in my pets eyes and say the phrase, "The more I am getting to know people, the more I love my pets." In some ways it's the truth because animals don't lie, cheat or become disloyal to you. They are your best buddies. It is also a fact that more young people and especially young men or women who have been married and divorced have decided to own a good pet and enjoy this relationship first and foremost. Animals in our lives really round us out as a human being and bring the very best out in us. Good luck with your cat.

Oh yes, I use IAMS wet/dry food for my cat. It's a healthy product. I feed my dog and cat twice a day (see directions on the tin and package) as to how much to give them. Feeding them twice a day will stop acidity in their stomachs. So feed them when you have breakfast and then at your dinnertime and that way you won't forget to feed them. Be sure you give an hour a day (can be broken up) or several cuddles at night to your pet and you'll have that little cat of yours for many years to come.

Answer

My cat is 16 1/2 years old. When I took her for her annual check-up a month ago, the vet said she was in excellent shape for her age and very healthy.

I agree with the first answer above. Four very important things (in my opinion) to helping your cat live a long, healthy life are 1) Good quality food (upon recommendation from my vet, I feed my cat Science Diet senior hairball formula), 2) Lots and lots of love and affection (you'll get lots more back then you'll ever give), 3) Keep lots of fresh water available ... it's as important for animals as it is for humans, and 4) Don't let your cat outside ... statistics show that indoor cats live longer and overall are healthier than outdoor cats.

You can't make a cat grow to 12 years old, the only thing that you can do is feed it well give it a place to sleep, somewhere to go poo poo and most importantly give it LOVE!

Answer

The cat needs to be in a good condition, so no smoking, no beating it up, no letting it roam free outside if he wasn't shot (or anything to prevent diseases) and do not let coyotes kill it. Once my cat got in a fight with a coyote, but he survived; he only got a few bites on his ears but he's still with me, on my lap!:)

Answer

You cant force a cat to live longer, but if you treat it kindly, then it will be more happy. my cat is only 7 1/2 but he's not exactly average weight, but he's still going strong. :)

Do fleas leave worms?

Yes, fleas can and do carry diseases that can infect dogs. The most common flea-borne disease of dogs in the United States is tapeworms. This is why a monthly flea/tick preventive medication is a good idea.

How do I make a litter picker?

How old should a kitten be to eat solids?

Kittens usually begin the weaning process around 4-6 weeks of age. They begin by taking an interest, or picking at their mother's solid food. At this age they will still be suckling and getting nutrients from their mother, but putting a tiny bit of wet food down every few hours will entice them to eat. You could see if they will lick food off your fingertip or off their own paws. This first stage can take several days.

Mushed up wet food, or wet food that is throughly mixed with a little water or kitten milk is the best type of food for them right now. It is easy for them to eat and digest. It is advisable not to try dry food as, even softened with water, kittens may still not be able to eat it. As the kittens get older and bigger, you can slowly decrease the amount of water or kitten milk you use in the food, and leave slightly larger chunks for them to chew.

Be sure to feed them from a plate and not a bowl, as it is easier for the kittens to pick up the food.

How many claws does a domestic cat have on each rear foot?

usually five on the front, 4 on the back

polydactyl cats can have more 'fingers' on the front paws usually. most common is one additional 'finger' on each front paw, somewhat resembling thumbs. :) *meow*

How do you litter train a wild kitten?

The best way to litter-train kittens is to have a litter tray close to where they are, always making sure that the tray not to high for them to get into. Then about once every couple of hours pick them up and put them into the tray. At first they should just walk around in it maybe sniff a bit but after a while they'll instinctively dig, And after a while they'll understand. Every kitten is different but they should learn quite quickly.

How do you make a cat happy after its declawed?

To reduce lameness, don't declaw to start with. Declawing is considered inhumane by many and many countries have banned the procedure just for that reason. In the short and long term, it hurts the cat. If the procedure is done incorrectly, there can be complications, infections, etc. There is a chance the cat will be in pain for the rest of its life.

Claws are essential to the well-being of cats. A cat's claws, and the toes they are attached to, are important for cats for many reasons. Cats are digitigrades which means that they use their multi-functional claws everyday in many ways. They walk on their toes and use them for balance, exercising, climbing, and stretching the muscles in their legs, back, shoulders, and paws. They also use them for grasping toys, digging litter, communicating, grooming, and self-defense. Declawing a cat just to protect furniture is selfish. If you value items more than caring about the cats themselves, then you should not have a cat.

I don't think declawing is right at all. If your having a scratching problem get her cat toys she can scratch on like mats or a climbing tower. If she scratches on things she shouldn't squirt her with some water from a spray bottle. I feel that declawing is inhumane. If that's what you resort to your to lazy to do the right thing for the animal. In fact, declawing is considered so inhumane that at least 25 countries have banned this procedure.

Do you know what they do when they declaw the cat?

The procedure is essentially ten complex amputations. The cat must remain anesthetized for the entire procedure, increasing operative risk. But they DO NOT give paim meds while the cat heals. The wound can rip open and bleed.

A cat's claw is a complex digit. It is not just a fingernail as it is with humans. The nails are part of the cat's last toe joint and retract and are actuated by muscles and tendons. By cutting into these, you raise the risk of serious long-term physical and emotion impacts for your cat.

Declawed cats in effect are reduced in their ability to gain traction and to walk properly. They have to move with their weight shifted backwards from their natural posture. Claws exist for many reasons:

~To stretch out muscles and spine

~To help exercise and stay fit

~To provide defense against mistreatment or other animals

~To provide traction and grip in all sorts of environments

The consequences of declawing are larger than many people realize. Cat's behaviors can change. Declawed cats no longer have their primary defense mechanism and turn to biting as a default behavior. Physical ailments such as premature arthritis, cystitis, or perennial skin disorders can occur. Bungled surgeries can result in growth of deformed claws or serious infection.

So Please do NOT declaw your cat. There are so many better ways of dealing with the scratching: Train the cat or kitten to use a scratching post. Many cats will take to scratching posts naturally. Make it a regular habit of clipping the cat's claws using a pet nail clipper. The other alternative is to purchase something called "soft paws". These are little plastic "gloves" that fit onto each claw to stop it from scratching furniture.

Does your cat have mange?

No, my cat does not. But, since your asking, I suppose you cat does, so here is what you have to do:

Mange is a skin contagious skin condition caused by mites and parasites in animals. Most of the time, cats that are affected by mange are outdoor cats. Left untreated, the cat can become very ill and can lose their fur. Mange can cause discomfort, scratching and itching. There are several options for treating a cat for mange.

Mange in cats is fairly uncommon; however it is possible for a cat to contract mange. If your cat is loosing fur, you should always take your cat to the vet. Other diseases and problems other than mange can cause hair loss. A vet can look at a sample of the cat's skin or fur under a microscope to determine whether or not your cat has mange.

There are a few different types of mange that are thought to affect cats. Ear mites are not usually considered mange, but the parasites that cause ear mites can also cause mange. Ear mites should always be treated with injections or prescription ear drops. When a cat has ear mites, the inside of their ears will look dirty. Black oily-looking dirt will cover the inside of the cat's ears. These are not the actual mites, but are the dropping left behind from the mites.

Another form of mange is called Demodex Mange, also called "red mange". This type of mange is not contagious. Cat and dogs do not pass this type of mange to each other. Most cats and dogs have small amounts of these mites living on their skin. This form of mange does not often bother the cat unless it becomes inflamed. It might show up on the cat as small patches of hair loss. In more serious cases, it can cause a bacterial infection on the skin. The skin can become inflamed, red and itchy. Demodex Mange usually starts causing problems in cats that are immuno-suppressed or that are aging. This type of mange can also adversely affect cats with poor nutrition. Hormones and stress might also cause this type of mange to cause problems. It can be seen in pregnant and nursing cats or male cats that are not neutered.

There are treatment options for this kind of mange. When you take your cat to the vet for possible mange, you vet will perform a thorough health exam. This will rule out autoimmune diseases and other forms of parasites such as worms. An oral medication called Ivermectin can be used. Although this drug is not approved by the FDA to use for mange, many vets find this treatment extremely effective. Another treatment option is dipping your cat in a prescribed pesticide. This is highly effective, but can be cause problems such as vomiting and seizures in cats. Also, it is poisonous, so it should not be used with pregnant cats or by people who are pregnant. This dip is usually done weekly for up to six weeks.

Sarcoptic mange is another form of mange that can affect cats. This form of mange is highly contagious and very problematic. Cat that are affected by this type of mange are extremely itchy and the scratching can cause serious inflammation and sometimes bleeding of the skin. Mites will burrow into the skin and lay the eggs. When a cat has this, the excessive scratching can also cause scabbing and infections on the skin.

This form of mange is usually determined by examining the cat's skin or fur under a microscope. If it is indeed Sarcoptic mange, your vet will want to wash the cat with a medicated shampoo and then treat the cat with a pesticide dip. Just as with "red mange", this pesticide dip is very potent and extreme caution should be used when treating your cat.

If you suspect your cat has mange, you will have to take your cat to the vet for an exam. In order to treat the infection, it is necessary to know which type of mange your cat has. Also, it is not recommended to use "home remedies" for mange that are often found. These can be extremely dangerous to your cat. In many cases, hair loss is not mange. Hair loss can be caused by allergic reactions to foods, plants or even medications. Allergic reactions are treated much differently than mange so it is very important to seek medical care for your cat.

Which has a greater number of units the mass of a cat in grams or the mass of the same cat in kilograms?

This depends on ones perspective and understanding of how the metric system is built up.

If this cat's weight is 2.5 kilogram then this can also be written as 2,500 grams.

The actual "numbers" used to display the result is less in kilogram than in grams, but we also have to realize and know that the word "Kilo" mean "thousand"

We typically shorten kilogram to "kg", but it does not alter the units of measurement, of which is still grams. It is only the presentation of the numbers that will be different, but it will read out just the same number.

It is quite different to the imperial system which today have units that are standardized and described "accurately" using metric measurements.

Where as the imperial system also differ between USA and UK, the metric system is the same all over the world.

How do you remove cat urine on a leather couch?

You can't get cat piddle out of your leather jacket. I suggest getting a new leather jacket! You don't. You throw it away or all the cats in the neighborhood will also pee on your jacket as they will want to put their scent on it! You can try something called ProKlean you can find it on the web, you may wanna try that instead of throwing away a leather jacket I have an old leather coat and it stank! I put it in the washer. I put it on a wool wash, ran it through 4 cycles and it came out immaculate and no smell. I dried it slowly and it's as good as new. I wasn't going to be able to wear it anyway, so I had nothing to lose!

What do you do if your cat's nose is dry?

Just a dry nose does not mean the cat may be sick. A dry nose is common in cats. If there were other symptoms with a dry nose the cat may be ill. Look for lathargy, pale gums, irregular breathing, things of this sort to consider the cat may be ill.

My sister has 3 cats and their noses are dry. It just means that they have not had a drink or have licked their nose in about a half hour or so. It does not always mean that the cats are sick! ~Me!!

splash it with water to make it wet again.
