What are the ingedients in meow mix cat food?

Meow Mix Original Choice Ingredients:

Ground yellow corn, corn gluten meal, chicken by-product meal, soybean meal, beef tallow preserved with mixed tocopherols (source of vitamin E), turkey by-product meal, salmon meal, ocean fish meal, brewers dried yeast, phosphoric acid, animal digest, calcium carbonate, potassium chloride, tetra sodium pyrophosphate, calcium chloride, choline chloride, added color (red 40, yellow 5, blue 2, and other color), salt, taurine, zinc sulfate, ferrous sulfate, l-alanine, niacin, vitamin E supplement, biotin, folic acid, copper sulfate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, thiamine mononitrate, citric acid, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of vitamin K activity), calcium iodate, sodium selenite.

Meow Mix is a terrible quality food. The first ingredients are "Ground yellow corn, corn gluten meal". Cats are strict carnivores - they get all their nutrition and energy from Proteins and Fats in fresh meat. Therefore a food truly suitable for a cat is one with meat FIRST on the list (or even better, the first three), not corn.

Yellow Corn, Corn Gluten Meal and Soybean Meal are also one of the most common causes of allergies in foods. See Related Links below for more information.

Next there is: chicken by-product meal, soybean meal, beef tallow preserved with mixed tocopherols (source of Vitamin E), turkey by-product meal, brewers dried yeast

  • By-Product Meal are the leftover parts of the animal (lungs, spleen, kidneys, brain, liver, blood, bone, some fatty tissue, and stomach and intestines). Not very good quality, but better than corn.
  • Salmon/Fish/Turkey Meal is terrible; its the rendered (moisture and fat removed) "waste" tissues of an animal. Very low quality which has little Protein in.
  • Soybean meal is soy that is added to cat food for the protein benefit, but because its a plant it gives barely any nutritional value whatsoever. The possible allergic reaction to soy makes it an ingredient to avoid. Many cat foods have banned any soy product being used in the their foods.
  • Beef Tallow is essentially rendered fat. This gives the food a bit of flavour.
  • Animal Digest is a broth made from unspecified parts of animals. The animals used can be obtained from any source, so there is no control over quality or contamination. This can include roadkill, animals euthanized at shelters, restaurant and supermarket refuse.

Other things in the list that are worrying: added color (red 40, yellow 5, blue 2, and other color), there is also added salt (too much salt over a period of time could seriously harm a cat).

Needless to say, Meow Mix is very poor quality which some ingredients could cause allergies.

There are foods that are completely free of these ingredients, with Named Meat sources at the first of the Ingredients list. Such high-quality foods are much healthier for a cat and much easier to digest. Cats are carnivores and they cannot digest such high quantities of grain and corn. It often gets stored as fat which is the main cause of obesity.

Which is better for cats - Frontline or Adavantage?

Any vet I have ever spoken to has always recommended Advantage, I would trust their opinions. Frontline has caused allergic reactions and many times is ineffective against fleas.

Another Answer

Neither. They are both filled with chemical insecticides that have been suggested that they can cause liver damage in pets. Plus the FDA recently updated its regulation requirements for these types of products.

If you are worried about fleas its best to use something natural like Target Spray for fleas instead, and regular grooming with a flea comb.

Does cat waste from kitty litter make the whole house smell bad?

This can depend on the litter and the cat's diet. Generally, most cat litters will absorb the smell of waste fairly well, but some do it better than others. Wood pellets have their own pine fragrance which absorbs any bad smells and fragrances the area with pine.

Another factor is the cat's diet. A cat's waste reflects what it eats: if fed a poor quality food, the chances are the majority of the food will pass through the cat and thus create a terrible smell. A high quality cat food with a very high, named meat content with no grain or cereals will produce less smell and waste as there will be less waste in the food itself.

The best foods are ones with a high meat content (labelled as Chicken, Turkey, Rabbit, Lamb, Tuna, etc.) as the FIRST ingredient with no grains, wheat, corn or any other cereals. Be sure to keep away from Ingredients such as grain, corn, wheat gluten, various sugars as they serve no nutritional value to the cat whatsoever.

Cats cannot digest such a high level carbohydrate at all; the stomach usually ends up working far harder than it should just to try and break the kibble down (a cat's stomach has evolved to break down raw meat quickly - not to store grain). This is the main cause of unwanted gas and overly smelly waste.

My young cat has been fed a high quality, grain free food with a 60% meat content all his life. Any smells from the litter tray cannot be detected from even one meter away, much less the whole house.

If your cat's litter tray smells overly bad, it is advisable to change the cat's diet to see if there's any improvement on the new food. Always transition the cat off the old and onto the new food slowly as not to upset its stomach.

When does catnip wear off?

Some of my cats it doesn't bother at all, some it will last 20 minutes. I have some that catnip will make mean for a few minutes, and some it makes them mellow. I don't let them have it very often, don't want my cats hooked on whacky weed! :-)

Will a 2010 Fancy Feast Christmas Ornament be offered this year?

Filling out the survey must have worked! They are reinstating the yearly ornament starting next year. Thankfully I filled out the survey. Today I received a special gift in the mail...A 2010 glass ornament!!! Compliments of Fancy Feast. It is beautiful...I have the entire collection (plus one that I swear must have been a promo (a heart very similar to the 1985&87 that reads "I love my cat", it is also made by Russ.

I hope so, my whole family enjoys putting all their Fancy Feast ornaments on the tree each year and look forward to the new design every year.

Another Answer:

I just called the rebate number that deals with Fancy Feast. The male operator says a survey was sent out in regards to the 2010 ornament in early 2010. He did not give me the results of it, but said it is suspended at this time. However 2010 is almost done.. So I'd say it finished for this year.. Then end of a tradition but all things do end.

If you want to call Fancy Feast yourself, here is the number:

Call 1-866-800-7576.

Hours of operation:

Monday - Friday, 7am - 6pm CT that rebate number that deals with FF rebates.

I just called today (11/10/10) and was told that there will not be a FF ornament this year. However, they are planning to offer one next year (2011) so be on the lookout for info around October (usually end of Oct) 2011. Hope this helps!

Parenthetically, they said there was very little interest last year and that interest had declined in general in recent years. I pointed out that the reason there was so little interest last year is because they didn't offer an ornament. Instead, they offered a tree topper and that's not the same as an ornament. Plus many people have special tree toppers and don't want another one (especially one that looks like an ad).

As for the decline in general over the years, I suggested that maybe it was because they were too big. The early ones were smaller and more tastefully done.

What home remedy can be use to cure RLS?

Many RLS sufferers have to take prescription medications to get their symptoms under control, but it makes sense to pursue other avenues before that time comes. Here are some recommendations from the experts and RLS patients themselves:

  • Stop smoking, and avoid caffeine and alcohol.
  • Exercise every day, even if it's just walking for a half-hour and/or doing a few calf stretches. Avoid strenuous exercise before bedtime.
  • Change your ergonomics. Try working at a high stool where you can dangle your legs. Take an aisle seat during meetings or on airplanes so you can walk around periodically.
  • Change your sleep patterns-some patients report that symptoms do not occur if they sleep late in the morning.
  • Take over-the-counter drugs. Before taking stronger medications, try over-the-counter pain relievers, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which include ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and naproxen (Anaprox, Naprosyn, Aleve). However, be careful with use of NSAIDs. Although they work well, long-term use can cause stomach problems, such as ulcers and bleeding, and possible heart problems.
  • Have more sex. There are anecdotal reports that sexual activity and orgasm may relieve RLS symptoms. The release of orgasm-related dopamine and opioid may play a role in the relief of RLS symptoms.
  • Drink lots of water throughout the day and evenings. Don't just gulp it all down at once, but sip it so that the body absorbs it rather than in one end and out the other.
  • Put soap under the sheets. Many RLS sufferers have reported that this mysterious remedy actually works. No one knows why, but it's certainly harmless. Put a bar of Ivory under the bottom sheet and see if your symptoms subside. This also works for leg cramps.
  • Take apple cider vinegar tablets (or a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in water at bedtime if you can tolerate the taste).
  • Practice progressive muscle relaxation at bedtime. Best Health Magazine recommends, "Breathe deeply for a few minutes, then tense the muscles in your feet. Hold the tension for a few seconds, then relax. Next, tense your calf muscles, hold, and relax. Then do the same with your thigh muscles. Repeat the tensing-and-relaxing pattern, working all the way up your body to your neck and face muscles. When you're finished, your whole body should feel relaxed."
  • Slowly and rhythmically slide your leg back and forth on the bed. This may keep your leg from jumping.

What can you do about your kitten's litter box if you clean it out every day and change it once a week but there is still an odor?

We have had EXCELLENT luck with a product called EVER CLEAN. We've got 5 cats in the house, and visitors find that hard to believe since they never smell any odor.

If a cat has missed the box, and urine has gotten on your floor, clean with a warm solution that is heavy on white vinegar. There also is a new product that has recently been introduced called 0 Odor...and that's what it provides. But the best way to control the odor is to prevent it in the first place, and that's where the EVER CLEAN comes in. We've tried ALL the current litters, and EVER CLEAN works best for us.

*************************************************************

I used to have the same problem, try using scented cat litter and if that still doesent work just spray some air freshner around the room if it really pongs!

Baking Soda, and try different brands and types of litter. They are not all the same quality. Just experiment until you find a good one.

The food your feeding makes a difference too. I mean, what goes in must come out. I found that when I feed my cats inferior food the box gets much worse.

Also, I don't know what your cleaning routine is right now, but cat pee can kind of soak into a plastic litter box. It helps if when you change the litter box, you empty it completely, let some dish-washing detergent soak in there for a while and then set it out to dry in the sun.

Be sure the litter box is a real one and not just a plastic organizer or such because most litter boxes are treated, but it should also have a smooth shiny inner surface. Using a clumping litter is really best, and most have odor neutralizers in them. Of course you could use litter box liners, but most of the time they get slashed by the cat's claws. I clean mine about every week or so, and I have no odors come from it unless she has a poop; and it is cleaned out right away. Also wipe from just above the litter the the rim every day. That will help to keep odors away.

You should change it like twice a week because it will stink really bad no matter what you do

I use Feline Pine's clumping formula, Its the best smelling/best odor control litter I've used yet. Best clumping too and eco friendly to boot!

____________________________________________________________________

You also may want to try cleaning the area around where you keep the litter box because sometime the cat may miss the litter box or kick some of its "wastes" out.

And also try buying a new litter box or keeping it in the garage so that you can't smell the odor anymore.

Which is better for your cat - gourmet or sheba?

Neither. Both are supermarket brand cat foods, and supermarket brand cat foods should be avoided, as they are absolutely the worst food you can feed your cat. Most supermarket brands -- such as Purina, Friskies, Whiskas, Fancy Feast, Tender Vittles, Sheba, etc., etc. -- are made with extremely low-quality "meat." It is actually really disgusting. These brands are made with all the leftover animal parts, including ground-up chicken beaks and feet, cow eyeballs, intestines, and something called "Animal Digest." Animal digest is essentially a mishmash of leftover parts; it can include rats, roadkill animals, and animals that were euthanized at animal shelters -- including dogs and cats. That's right, cats. These brands also include something called "ash," which is burnt animal remains. It is absolutely revolting.

Luckily, there are better foods available, made with high-quality meat that is fit for human consumption. They are more expensive than supermarket brands -- up to $2 a can -- but they will keep your cat healthy, and will add years to his life. It is well worth the money to keep your beloved pet healthy and happy. And in fact, you will most likely save money in the long run: since better cat food means a healthier cat, you will save hundreds, even thousands of dollars on veterinary bills.

High-quality cat food brands are sold at most pet stores, including Petco, Pet Stop, and petnetdirect.com. Some high-quality brand names include: Innova/Evo, Weruva, Max Cat, PetGuard, California Natural, Instinct, Prairie, Natural Balance, Solid Gold, Merrick, Wellness, Eagle Pack, Newman's Own, WYSONG, Precise, etc., etc.

If you really cannot afford to buy this food for your cats, then Iams brand is an acceptable second-choice. Iams is a supermarket brand, but it is of a higher quality than most supermarket brands. It's not as good as Innova/Evo, Weruva, Max Cat, etc., etc., but it is better than the other supermarket brands.

Also, although it is not strictly necessary, it is a good idea to feed your cat both wet and dry food. Wet food is more fatty than dry food, so a diet consisting of nothing but wet food can potentially cause weight problems. But more importantly, dry food helps scrape plaque off of the cat's teeth, giving him healthier teeth and gums, and better-smelling breath. My personal favorite dry food brand is Innova/Evo: most cats love it, and it makes their coat super-shiny and soft.

Also, although it is not strictly necessary, it's a good idea to give your cat some variety with his diet. Having variety in your diet is good for humans, and for cats too. Also, sometimes cats get bored eating the same thing every day. Whenever I go to Pet Stop to buy cat food, I always buy a few different flavors of each different brand, so as to give them as much variety as possible. My cats get a different wet food every night, and during the day they get Innova/Evo dry food.
