If you just copy MP3 files to a CD, then this is a data CD meant to work in a computer, it will not play in a regular CD player. You need to use a special burning tool to burn it specifically as an audio CD not a data CD.

If the CD/DVD drive still opens and closes, the best thing to do if you are running XP is

Start > Control Panel > Performance and Maintenance > system. Hardware tab > Device manager

Then look for the DVD or CD drive, right click and either enable it or update the driver. Then your drive should work again.
