I had this happen with my 1999 Expedition. There was a cracked air line under the hood. The air line ran from the compressor to the rear "air bags," which are not really air bags but more like an air spring that holds up the rear of the car.

The local Ford dealership locate the break in the hose, and fixed it for about $100. I got lucky - it could have been more expensive. The air shock itself can be several hundred dollars. So can the compressor. It also could be something like a sensor, which is fairly cheap (under $50). Anyway, good luck.

If you are wanting to rid yourself of a bunch of headaches and wallet crunching, check out Strutmasters. I bought a non air conversion kit from Strutmasters for my 2002 Expedition and it worked great! The ride is good the price was even better. If you hare having issues with your air already it wont be long before something else will go on it and it could cost you up into the thousands to fix. Grab the bull by the horns and take care of this problem air ride.

This question is a bit confusing. Dimensions of the entire car? Engine?

Well I'll answer both.

The cars body itself is 16'8" long. It does have different dimensions when it comes to width. The bed of the car is 5' wide. Then, it flares out gradually to a 5'8" width. Of course, the height is different from the front, to the passenger area, to the bed, with height dimensions for the passenger area is 4'8". However I was measuring that from the ground, so it could be different from yours if you have different tires.

As far as engine size goes, you'll need your VIN number to determine what size you have. There were four for the 1980 El Camino, but also, with the vehicle being 28 years old, previous owners may have put something else in it.

The beginning of my VIN is 1W80KAR (the last 6 are just the production number)

1= General Motors division code

W= Model Series Code for Malibu and El Camino

80=describes body style (pickup 2dr)

K=engine size, mine being a v6, 229

A=1980 model

R=production site, this one being Arlington, TX

For other VIN numbers, the breakdown would be as follows:

Engine:

Pretty much any 350 Chevy engine from 1968 to 1987 will work.

I will assume you have the column shift automatic with the round gauges on the instrument panel. The OEM Indicator is GM part # 25021207 if you can find one. If not, try a Google search for 83 Monte Carlo shift indicator. That should get you to Mike’s Montes online store. You could try your luck with eBay but that has mainly used parts or overpriced OEM. If you can’t figure out how to remove the dash face plate, then don’t attempt this repair.

Remove the oil pan and count the bolts on the main caps.

The 2 end ones will only have 2 bolts each in them no matter what.

If it's a 4- bolt main, then all the middle caps will have 4 bolts per cap.

Disconnect the 4 way plug at the distributor so as to put the computer offline. Set the timing to specs and then reconnect the 4 way plug.

I own a 1980 El camino registered in the state of Texas. The title classification is 1/2 ton pickup and the licence plate is classified as a truck. May not be true to all states.

Look on Craigslist. Mostly in OK, NC, SC, TX & FL. but you can fine them all over. Found mine in MI.

Assuming Engine Oil ... there is a filler neck on one side or the other of the engine labeled "OIL" or similar. Remove that cap and pour the oil in. Check the level of what is being added using the dipstick.
