What is the location of the long and short bolts in the big block Chevy heads?

There is a super short length. This runs along the outside, lower ridge. Then there will be 2 in between, they each go on either end, under the valve cover. The longest ones will go down the center, under the valve cover.

Should a New car battery need to be charge?

I would say it depends on how long the battery sat around at the retailer. If you bought a battery that is very popular and fits many models then it probably has not sat around very long. If your battery is an oddball, and has been sitting, then it may need a charge. I would recommend a charger with an automatic setting which will cut off when the charge is complete. Rick.

Can you install a Pontiac 400 into your 1981 Chevy Elcamino?

Yes, many have swapped them into Grand Prix's and Lemans' of the same year. You will need the motor mounts for the Pontiac V8, and the transmission must match the Pontiac bellhousing (it is not the same as the Chevy pattern). Other minor issues may creep up such as throttle linkage, wiring (starter is on the opposite side), exhaust (I believe the Pontiac manifolds will clear the frame), but the are not insurmountable.

Valve adjustment procedure on Chevy 305?

With the engine at operating temp, remove a valve cover and start the engine (Note: there will be oil coming out of the pushrods and spraying onto the exhaust manifold, so work quickly). Using a ratchet with a fairly long extension, one at a time, slowly back off the rocker nut until the lifter starts rattling. Slowly tighten the nut until the noise stops, then at 1/4 turn intervals, tighten the rocker nut down one full turn. When all 8 are finished, kill the motor, install the valve cover, then repeat the procedure on the other side.

If the heads have just been installed, they are adjusted with the engine off. Turn the engine to TDC #1 (aligning the timing mark, but ensure both valves are closed - look at #6 - they should have the exhaust valve just closing and the intake opening, #3 should have its intake open), then work on the #1 valves. Back the rocker nut off until the pushrod is loose, then tighten the nut until the pushrod no longer can be spun freely, then turn the nut one full turn. Do that to both the #1 intake and exhaust. Turn the crank 1/4 turn, then repeat for #8. Turn the crank another 1/4 turn and repeat for #4, then 3, 6, 5, 7, and 2. If it was done properly, they should be exactly correct with an engine running adjustment, but it is wise to check them all with it running.

Take the bolt out of motor mount on the side that you're changing and jack the engine up and change the mount. When you're done with one side, do the same with the other.

How do you remove a heater core on a 1987 El Camino?

Very carefully drive it to the nearest service facility and pay them to perform this task and send out the core for refurbishing then reinstall the core into the car> if you dont have the skills or training you will only screw up the job.

On the 1987 El Camino the heater core is removed totaly from under the hood. The Chiltons Manual that you can get at any auto parts store for that year shows how to do it.

Will this firing order work on a 396 big block 12468753?

== == The firing order for the Chevrolet V-8 is 18436572.

To change the firing order you must change the cam shaft.

For example the # 1 cylinder firing can be changed with the #6 cylinder firing as long as the camshaft has be made to open and closed the valves at the proper time with each perspective cylinder.

That doesn't mean you can simply grind a cam to change any cylinder firing as each piston has to be at TDC at the time when the valves are both closed for compression and consequent firing of the gases. Good luck.
