If it takes multiple attempts to start the vehicle, likely the brushes in the starter have gone bad requiring at a minimum the replacement of those or more than likely a new starter. From what I'm told, this is a very common problem on the 300M series. ADDED: If the car usually starts when cold and tends to not start after engine is fully warmed, check for a bad crankcase position sensor (also called a cam position sensor). Often this is the problem.
