Usually you don't. I am assuming you are running windows and in that case you can change the entire keyboard layout and since yen is the currency of Japan you probably don't want to change the keyboard to japanese. You can however access the yen symbol by going to the character map program via Start > Accessories > Character Map

Most Windows programs use them similarly, but program designers can write them to do other things. Only way to know for sure is trial and error or reading the help files per program.
