What does RAM consists of?

This varies wildly by the kind of memory. There are a few common structures, however.

Physically, there is some sort of I/O interface (input/output). This is usually a series of pins, which connect the RAM module to the computer.

There is also the RAM cells themselves, usually small square black 'chips' containing so many MB or GB of data each.

There is usually some sort of SPD or logic chip which identifies the RAM and it's default operating parameters, but is not always the case.

And there is always a memory controller, although this may not be on the RAM itself but is usually on the motherboard, or in the case of AMD, built into the CPU.

Logically, there are 'rows', 'columns', and 'banks'.

Rows and columns work just like a spreadsheet, and are used to access individual sectors inside the memory chips. This applies to each chip or bank on the memory.

Are external hard drives reliable?

Yes they are. They're also a VERY good way of backing up all the information on your computer in case it gets stolen !

Most external hard-drives simply connect to a spare USB port - making them quick and easy to use.

If you have a system that supports Dual Channel Memory do you have to use two sticks of DIMM or can you use only one stick. I.E.- Will the computer operate with one stick.?

I know this sounds like a put off answer but you cannot tell the number of sticks you need inside a computer just based on using DIMMS..DIMM is the brand type of the memory, it means Dual Inline Memory Chip, which means that RAM is on both sides of the stick. It does not have anyting to do with how many sticks of RAM you use. The only way to check is to either open up your computer and see how many RAM slots you have or check the manufactorers website. Sorry but that's the way it works. .

How do you check RAM capacity of my desk top?

Why is my virtual memory bigger than my physical memory?

Physical memory is the RAM which you have placed on your motherboard, so if u have 4 slots which support 4 GB max it will equal 16 GB.
Virtual memory is the amount of virtual memory allocated by the user & resides on the Hard Disk (Pagefile.sys). There is no limit to the amount of virtual memory which a user can set on a PC. It all depends on the size of the hard disk.
