Try rebooting your computer--you may have exceeded its capabilities and need to release the memory. If that doesn't work, then check out the mouse.

First, try replacing the battery, if you have a wireless mouse. Also remove and replace the "dongle" in the USB port. If your mouse is not wireless, check that it is plugged in.

If none of this works, try using your mouse with another computer, or use a different mouse. Either of these actions may give you more information, indicating where the problem lies.

There are quite some differences between an optical mouse and a laser mouse.

One of the most noticeable differences is the type of rays coming out of the mouse. To left click on a Mac you need to place the Index finger (Forefinger) on the left side of the mouse and press down firmly. Similarly to right click requires the middle finger to be placed on the right side of the mouse and press down firmly.
