on a male horseshoe crab, the two front appendages look like boxing gloves. They use these to hold on to the female when they mate. on a female the two front appendages just look like regular claws

yes i use to have one and we kept him in a tiny plastic cage but no netting on the edge make sure its safe though it probably depends on the crab. If it is a small crab you could put it in a plastick cage, but when it gets older and bigger you might want to change it. good luck!!

i work in a pet store and i do know that Fiddler crabs eat microscopic critters that show up in the sand as well as algae. The crabs sift the sand with their claws (or claw if its a male crab) and get nourishment from the microscopic particles and bacteria in it.

...but as far as fish go, they are not the type to stalk their prey, they would rather have a wounded or weaker fish sort of drift by and then attempt to grab it. So you could possibly try some small minnows or maybe even the smaller goldfish (it all depends on the size of your crab). HOPE THIS HELPS :)

It could be a few things or a combination of them. Most likely the crab is stressed or sick. This can happen if it's by itself (hermit crabs live in large colonies in the wild), if it's tank environment is not suitable (you need 80 deg F, 80% humidity, moist coconut fiber or sand substrate, etc) or not getting the right nutrition ("hermit crab food" sold at pet stores often contains hermful chemical and preservatives), not the right kind of water (they need deep dishes of both fresh and salt water). Or he could have been attacked by another crab.

your hermit crabs are burrowing because they are about to molt. hermit crabs have exoskeletons so they have to molt or shed their exoskeleton to grow. so they dig underground to do that because hermies are vunrable they will stay underground to weeks to months NEVER dig them up. you know if they are dead if you smell rotting egg.

Not a good idea. First, toads are veracious eaters and may try to eat your crabs. Second, if you have crabs, you are supposed to offer them salt water. Toads have sensitive skin and if they jump into the salt water, it will mess up it's osmotic balance.

Yes it can but it depends what kind of shell. The shell must be like a conch shell, but not the kind for snails. There would be not enough room for the crab to squeeze his body in. You need a shell with an opening a little bit bigger than the shell opening it already has on if you want it to change into the new shell. But most the time they do not change shells (I have had one for over a year and it still hasn't). I know you probably want it to change into the pretty new shell you bought or found but do not try to manually do it for the crab.

The shell is like its house and clothes. It protects them from predators, provides a safe haven and a warm place to live, it's a nice place to sleep, and everything in between.
