Can you eat Florida sand crabs?
NO!
Caught a big one, thought maybe it might be good but all I tasted was the big claw and it was enough.
Can mud crabs survive with out water?
yes because in other ways you can dump water on sand to make out side the water
A Swamp Dog crab is a large Maryland Blue crab. A Swamp Dog crab weighs between 2-6 lbs. It is delicious, filling and meaty.
How long does it take a hermit crab to pick a new shell once it leaves its old one?
Generally, a hermit crab will not leave it's old shell until it has a good option in it's claws. If your crab leaves it's shell and does not pick up a new one right away, there is likely another issue going on that you should be concerned about.
The abdomen of the crab is very delicate and soft. The abdomen also requires moisture to keep it supple and healthy, and the crab keeps water in it's shell just for this. The crab will not risk exposing it's abdomen for long unless there is a very real issue going on.
There are several reasons a crab may leave it's shell and won't pick up a new one.
One reason may be that the crab has been in a shell that has a sharp ridge or an irritant in it that has caused injury to the abdomen over time. If a crab has an injury that prevents if from picking up a new shell, it is likely he will die, as he will think that every shell he puts on has an irritant in it, when actually it is the injury to the abdomen.
Another reason may actually be that an irritant has gotten into the crab's shell, and in this case, you should remove the shell the crab has dropped, boil it for a few minutes in dechlorinated water, rinse and cool it off, then spray a little ocean salt water into the opening and place it with the hole up so he can easily slide in if he chooses. Don't be concerned if he tips the shell over and gets substrate in it, he can clean it out himself at this point.
Please note that while painted shells may be fun to look at, they can be a health hazard for your crab. With the moisture that a crab must keep in his shell, paint that may have gotten inside the shell when it was painted will become wet, then dry, causing the crab's abdomen to be permanently stuck within the shell. This always leads to death. The crabs are always forced into these shells, so there could be an irritant inside that the crab would have avoided to begin with, but he was forced to take the shell he has. Painted shells should be strongly discouraged. Do not purchase painted shells for your crabs. The paint is also possibly toxic for them. It may be non toxic for humans, but has never been tested on crabs.
Another reason he may leave his shell is because he has suffered heat damage at some point in the past few weeks. This can happen by using heat rocks (a definite no-no in a hermit crab tank) as they can heat up to over 100*F, which is a dangerous temperature for a hermit crab. It will also dry him out if he is sitting on it, also killing him. This can also happen if you are using an under tank heater without a thermostat attached to control the temperature. If you use an under tank heater, use a probe type thermometer to take the temperature of the substrate over the center of the heating mat. If it is over 82*F, you should unplug it until you can get a thermostat to maintain the temp below 82*F. A crab burrowed down over a too-hot heating pad will also "cook", and the symptoms may not be apparent for several weeks. A crab does not recover from heat damage, it is permanent and deadly.
Do not try to force your crab into a new shell. If you really must encourage him to take a new shell, place several clean shells spritzed with ocean salt water in the openings into a container and place your crab in the container with them. Then set the container into the crabitat so the temp and humidity are good for him, and just leave him alone. It may be best to cover his part of the tank so that outside movement does not startle him. he is extremely stressed, or he would not be out of his shell without picking up another to begin with.
Can Sand Crabs breathe out of water?
yes because I have crabs right now in fresh water and they are still living.
You can leave the eggs in the nest for a while. If she is in the mood to lay and sit on eggs, she should be satisfied with the ones she has. Throw them out and she will probably lay more. Letting her keep these for a while gives her a rest.
Do hermit crabs live underwater?
Marine hermit crabs live underwater and can sometimes be found in tidepools. Land hermit crabs do not live in the water but need fresh and salt water to survive.
I remember seeing several very large blue crabs that were approx 12 to 14 inches wide and stood about 8 to 10 inches high when walking. I was about 8 when I came across the first one. It didn't run from me, I was the one who ran. The second time I saw a big blue crab, I was a teenager and it came out of the water and started walking inland. It didn't appear to be afraid of anything. I just left it alone.
How do crabs breathe when the tide comes in?
By either grabbing onto something thats close or digging a hole and hiding in it :3 (thats my best guess which i believe is right)
What does a crab's mouth look like?
Crab's mouths are either in the middle of their head or just under their shell below their eyestalks. Each species has a slightly different mouth, but the majority have mandibles and maxillae that cover other internal mouthparts.
they can be as little as small as 16 inches to the biggest being 54 inches. there have been some that are record recordings past 54 inches.
How do you keep a baby hermit crab alive?
The ground of a hermit crabs tank should include sand, a little dirt, rocks and broken coral pieces (all store bought only or can carry mites or diseases). Maintaining clean sand isn't really a problem because hermit crabs aren't really messy.2-3 inches or sand is required for burrowing of the crabs.
HousingI have 6 healthy hermit crabs living in a ten(10) gallon tank. Size differences will not be a problem because hermit crabs get along well. It is highly recommended that your crabs have cage mates because in the wild there pack animals.
Selecting a healthy hermit crabSome pet stores will allow you to hold or observe their crabs before choosing the one you want. Look for moving antenna noticing your looking inside their cage and if there running away from you. Look for a crab that is a bright red in color, no swollen limbs. If a pet store does not have a giant collection of empty shells in the tank, then don't buy any. Hermit crabs NEED extra shells to switch into and if don't have a big selection of them, are probably not healthy and may die due to stress. Avoid hermit crabs that are just hanging out in the middle or the cage unaware that anything is going on.
DietHermit crabs will eat just about anything from tree bark to other dead crustaceans. This includes leaves (preferably dry and crunchy),peanut butter, popcorn, fruits, vegies, crackers, applesauce, nuts, grass ,fish(dead only), cereal and everything in between. MAKE SURE NOT OF THESE PRODUCTS CONTAIN BUTTER OR SALT BOTH CAN POISON YOUR HERMIT CRAB!!! Remove all food the day after you put them in for in the hermit crabs humid habitat they will rot quickly. All foods found outside should be cleans WITHOUT soap.
HeatingHermit crabs come from a tropical environment so temperatures should stay around 70-83 degrees daily and night time temperatures should cool to around the high 60s to the low 70s.If your house is colder at night they make inferred bulbs so the animal can think its night because they cant see red and heats them up also it makes nocturnal viewing possible. Commercial goods like the hermit crab heater can be bought at pet stores. A UVA bulb is also required for sun rays.
WaterHermit crabs do need oxygen as well as they need water. You may think they breath to get oxygen, but no, hermit crabs have gills like fish. Oxygen is assimilated through water in the bloodstream, so it is very important to keep the humidity in your crabs enclosure at least 60 as seen on a humidity gauge. A humidity gauge isn't required as long as your smart enough to know you sprayed their cage enough. I say this because humidity gauges are very pricey, 15$ for a small one. Fresh and salt water is needed in their cage for drinking and salt water transfers calcium and keeps limbs hard and healthy. KEEP A SPONGE IN EACH WATER BOWLS AT ALL TIMES. Without the sponges, your hermit crabs have a very larger chance of drowning. Sponges can be bought at most pet stores. Tap water requires conditioner to take chlorine out and other harmfull materials.
HabitatHermit crabs need lots of different hiding spots especially for a colony of crabs in one enclosure. All pet stores that sells anything at all in the reptile region should cover this. Pet stores with this sell artificial and real little tree chunks with a hollowed center or for decoration many sell "hermit hotels", a tall "building" with a hermit crab logo with a welcome sign on the front. For my crabs I found in the aquarium section a sponge bob squarepants and squidward house which i put in their habitat. I found that with those, the windows are small holes which the crabs use to climb to the top of the house.
Behavior and HandlingHermit crabs are very sensitive animals and have moods. All but one of my hermit crabs have let me hold them and the last one pinched me. WARNING:HERMIT CRAB PINCHES HURT!!! Their rough skin along with rigid edges on the inside of the claw, provide a very hard pinch. When they pinch its either you made them made or there in a bad mood. When I got pinched the little guy wouldn't let go and it took dipping him upside down underwater to get him off. NEVER TRY TO TAKE YOUR HERMIT CRAB OUT OF THEIR SHELL!!! The inner soft tail of the crab is their most sensitive part and the crab will fight to the death to stay in the shell. Rarely you can catch a glimpse of your crab out of there shell which they only do when they molt. I saw it myself and its an amazing sight because they come out for less than 5 seconds about once every two months. To hold your hermit crab place it on for hand flat and if hes in a happy mood he will come out and walk. You will notice the crab will walk around upside down under your hand. Make sure you catch him if he falls. Avoid walking around with your crab because that ticks them off encouraging pinching.
The shells can be any color. It depends on what they have available to change into. The crab itself can be a variety of colors, depending on what type they are. Some common hermit crab colors are red, pink, brown, and purple.
How many offspring do crabs have?
Female crabs will only mate once, immediately after they have their terminal moult. Females carry the male's sperm around with them for up to two years. The females can fertilize several batches of eggs with the stored sperm during this time.
What is the colour of a crab's blood?
Yes they do, but you wouldn't really notice because their blood is blue (or can appear clear) in colour due to a lack of hemoglobin. Also, they don't have blood vessels, their blood just moves around in gaps between the organs and muscle tissue, so if their skin is broken they can bleed to death.
What in general do crabs like to eat?
Most crabs are omnivorous, meaning they eat whatever they can get. They feed mostly on algae but take other food including worms, molluscs and other crustaceans, bacteria, fungi and other organic waste depending on the species and their availability. Most crabs eat both plant and animal matter, but some are specialized to eat plankton or shellfish, and some actually catch fish.
How do you keep a blue crab as a pet?
yes, we went to the fish market and my son wanted one, not to eat but to put in the aquarium. Well it's a few weeks later and she is still alive AND about to have babies, well, she has the eggs, we'll see what happens!!
How does the hermit crab get its food?
you need to fill up the food bowl/plate/etc. up whenever it empties, wet the sponge with water every time it dries, keep the crabitat warm and humid, etc, and when it's molting, do whatever the answer to that say. DO NOT GIVE IT BATHS.
What are different types of shells?
Paper nautilus, conch shell, whelk shells, british pearl shells, and scallop shells. :)
