According to what I have heard, Contemporary is supposed to be against Ballet, and it was supposed to be for people who want to break free from the rules of Ballet. The woman that invented Contemporary probably learned Ballet and probably found it very restricted and questioned about (e.g.) why the positions were like that and why she could not do it another way. I think that is why she invented Contemporary.

What are the skills needed to perform dance?
I would say the most important physical skill is Core Strength. If your core strength is good you will be able to exert your maximum force to perform a move correctly. Core strength improves balance which improves plies, spins etc.
Core strength also improves flexibility as your stomach muscles are used to exert maximum force, for example, while doing leg kicks if you didn't use your muscles to lift your leg it would simply have no split what so ever.
Other physical skills are alignment and coordination. These are both examples of skills that use movement memory and body awareness.
The list of skills in Dance could go on for a while and are all linked together such as core strength is related to balance and flexibility as movement memory is related to coordination and alignment. No dancer, in my opinion, can possibly perform the correct moves without a good core body strength.

2. step clap: basically you stand in first position [legs together] step out on your left leg then bring your right leg to meet it so you are back in first position. clap when your right leg meets the ground. do this slowly then get faster and faster. there you go step clap! or you could do a jump when you bring your right leg in this is called step jump clap.
3. this move is a bit harder to explain. its called the box step. first you stand in first position. step forwards on your right leg then on your left leg. keep your legs apart [second position] then step back on your right leg then on your left back into first position. this move is a bit harder to explain but i hope it makes sense.
