At age 11/12 he won Star Search Junior Vocalist and around age 12/13 he was very sick and one of his vocal cords became paralyzed. For two years he could barely talk. He relearned how to sing with a Seth Riggs method trainer and over several years regained his voice and his vocal endurance.

At age 16 he decided to try out for American Idol. He made it to the top 2 and received 44 million votes in the finale but lost to rocker David Cook.

Both were offered record contracts immediately, and both have their first albums out. Archuleta's first single Crush has sold over 1.6 millions copies in the US and is also available in 40 or more other countries. It debuted at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100, the highest debut ever for an Idol first single not by the winner and the highest debut of any single in 8 months. Crush has been a number one hit in several countries including Viet Nam and the Philippines. His second single is A Little Too Not Over You which David cowrote with Mike Krompass and Robbie Neville. David is currently on his Winter 2009 solo US tour. After that he will do a small tour in Asia and then open for McFly on their UK tour.

The management of Idol actually offered him a recording contract right in his dressing room after the results where announced. He ended up going with a contract from Jive Records (a division of Sony). His first hit single Crush had the highest Hot 200 opening position of the year and has sold over 1.7 million copies in the US alone. It was also a #1 hit in many SE Asian countries. His first album "David Archuleta" has been a good seller, as well as his new Christmas album "Christmas from the Heart." And he is working on his second pop album.

He tours a lot. in 2008 he had a solo spring tour, a short Asian tour, opened for McFly on their UK tour, back to Asia to co-headline (with Idol winner David Cook) a concert to an audience of 50,000, did a 50-minute set at Demi Lovato's summer concerts and now has his own pop/Christmas concert.
