Introduction
How did Britain gain their indepence?
Britain was first invaded by the Romans who ruled for 400 years, there was then a time of minor regional kings, then the Vikings invaded and ruled part of the country for several hundred years. The Vikings were defeated and we had kings of Scotland and England. Then the Normans invaded in 1066 and took over England. Since that time nobody has successfully invaded England again although some have tried (e.g. the Spanish Armada).
We did have a civil war and Cromwell beheaded the King but after his death the monarchy was re-established and over time it turned into a constitutional monarchy with power to make laws vested with an elected parliament (Britain became a stable democracy).
Thus the history of Britain is long and complex and there is no simple answer to this question.

Poor people who did not own land had reduced rights. The expansion of rights to include all races and sexes and income levels has taken 200 years to be nearly complete.
